    Any lubbock fly fisherman?

I have a new fly set up and want some tips on casting.

Wouldn’t say I’m good at it, but I have done it some before. Mostly perch and bass, not much on the technical precision.

Not sure if there's one in Lubbock but if you have an Orvis store near you they do an awesome two beginner's class on fly fishing. Been a few years since I've done it but from what I remember it's completely free and you don't need to bring anything of your own with you, and they even give you some goodies at the end of the class.

Fly Wild next door to Evie Maes in Wolfforth does an occasional class or two. Mountain Hideaway does a class or two as well, but not as often. I fly fish as often as I can, but unfortunately that’s only 2-3 times a year. Haven’t bass or crappy fished with a fly since high school. Only been trout fishing the last 6-7 years since I got back into it a little.

youtube is your friend. There are lots of great videos to help you. Get a hula hoop and practice in the yard When we get past the virus, I will take you to the ranch. We catch catfish on flies all the time. A five pound plus catfish is a wild ride on a fly rod.

I can do a decent D loop cast in a mountain stream for trout. I spent 10 days on the Yakima River in the summer of 11 and thought I was decent until the 18 year old guide showed me how mistaken I was. He humbled my buddy and me tremendously but pointed out a lot of simple mistakes that most people make, including seasoned fishermen. The number one take away from everything he mentioned was don’t force it. Practice your technique constantly and your ability to cast precisely at a distance will improve over time. That being said, I’ve really slacked off on the practice for the last few years, but I can hit a 15” disc at 20-25 yards about 75% of the time. So in all fairness, I guess I still suck at it.
As mentioned above, YouTube has lots of good information.

Greg, I have fly fished a bit during my time in Arkansas. I wouldn’t be great, but might could help you get started.
