That was my experience as well. Only problem is I'm a slow learner, took 2 tries for me to figure out that no durn turkey was worth that abuse!

I had a leasemate that once took a long shot at a turkey with a rifle during deer season. It dropped right there. When he picked it up by the neck it came alive! There was no bullet hole - all we could figure is that the bullet hit the trunk of the tree it was standing next to and bark shrapnel stunned him. He wrestled it to the ground and was able to get his knife out and kill it but not before it shredded the front of the down-filled jacket he was wearing.
