Bear Butte outside Sturgess is one, and Curaloo lake is another. Camped at both places many times. Had no utilities back in 1977, but we survived. LOL -
When are you going ? Sturgis Rally is not a family friendly time up there.

You know that's not a bad idea I just have never done it and I am not sure if I could make reservations. I'd hate to drive all that way and not be able to find a spot. Having an RV may be an issue with dispersed camping, you'll have to find an area flat enough and big enough to pull off and camp but i bet you can.
June may be mud season and/or still snowy.
Looks like no open campfires on the SD side so maybe Wyoming side if you want a campfire.
