    Rest?

Do you guys mostly shoot off the shelf or do you use a rest? I was gonna buy one of those carpet style ones and thought maybe I ought to get your opinions. I appreciate the input.

I shoot off the shelf with the rifle resting on the sling strap.

I shoot off the shelf. You can either buy ready made shelf material but I typically use industrial Velcro and use the carpet side. Durable and lasts a very long time.

Shelf and just started using a piece of Velcro on it. Works great...

It’s all personal preference. Most 3D shoots around here don’t allow elevated rests, so not a lot of folks around here use them.

My preference is Velcro on the shelf and side plate.

If I'm feeling industrious, I skive a piece of top grain leather around the edges and glue it down. It works well. Velcro is a cheap and easy fix. You can buy a whole roll of the stuff at Hobby Lobby for $5 if you will clip a coupon or save it to your smart phone before going to the store.

Same answer today as it was over 5 years ago when I asked the same question.

Just about everybody shooting "trad" shoot feathers off the shelf. (Vs feathers or vanes off an elevated rest)

3D is one very good reason... simplicity is another... not all bows have cutouts that can take a flipper, etc, so folks don't bother starting out with one...

I have done calf hair, velcro, and bear hair/plate... they all work great.

I use Dr schools moleskin. Same piece for 3 years. It's not very eye appealing but works well and is very quite. It's also very thin so no difference if I want to replace it

                    I'm kind of confused.

If you are talking about the rug rest, then it isn't a rest at all.
It is simple a shelf covering just like leather, velcro, or anything else you use to cover the shelf & strike plate with to shoot "from the shelf" with. It isn't an elevated rest.

I know quite a number of folks who don't put anything on the shelf & strike plate, and shoot directly off the bare wood. It works just fine.

The only reasons I use a covering of some kind are: (1) It protects the bow from wear from arrow friction, and (2) It makes the bow quieter on both the draw cycle, and the shot.

It depends for me. I hunt with one of the cheapo stick on plastic rests. Use a strip of leather on the shelf when shooting most 3-D and TBOT shoots.

I shoot my longbows off the shelf with fuzzy velcro. About 6-7 years ago I tried a feather rest on my recurve and I really liked it so I left in on. I was surprised at how durable they are - I've only replaced it twice over that time. They are not real popular for some reason - I've never seen anyone else using one

I don't like feather rests because they put the arrow too far from my hand. I shoot of the shelf with velcro.

                            Rest?

I really like the feather rest on my Bear ‘59. Other than that I’ve only used different coverings such as leather, calf hair, or Velcro. I want to say it was Big Jim that told me Velcro isn’t the best to use for a strike plate due to it wearing thinner and thinner over time.

Sorry. Got real busy and it took me a while to get back on here. I figured most shoot off the shelf with a carpet style rest but figured it didn't hurt to ask. Thanks for the input. I'll probably look at 3 rivers for a calf or bear hair.
