I went in 2014 and LOVED it. Actually started the trip in Istanbul which was fantastic but not sure how safe/welcoming it is right now. In Greece, went to Athens (good for historical sites and maybe a couple of days at most), Kefalonia (much less touristy and more "natural"; probably my favorite), and Santorini which was beautiful and would be great for your anniversary. If you are interested in more detail let me know and I'll be happy to share.

Been twice, it’s very nice (as you’d expect) but can be like most very tourists oriented. Now Crete is another story, it is a dream destination, we went into several areas where the locals stayed and lived. The island is amazing, there are numerous look outs to see the Mediterranean and where ex military bases were.

Sweet. Leaning toward splitting time in Santorini and Crete...any other recommendations?

Not to repeat myself but do check out Kefalonia. As a hunter I'm guessing you like the "natural" and the outdoors and Kefalonia gives you a bit of freedom to explore on your own that many other places don't really have. When international, I avoid having to drive any time I can but Kefalonia is an exception and you can get an inexpensive rental and driving is easy and you can really go where you like. Beautiful and unique beaches too. I'll go dig up some pics soon to share with you. If you want some of my recommendations for Santorini let me know.

Did Santorini and Milos this summer. Santorini is what you’d expect. Milos is a treasure and a quick ferry from Santorini. Great affordable VRBO houses there on one of the many beaches. The most beautiful and unique island I’ve been to. You really can’t go wrong in the Cyclades. My only strong suggestion is don’t go to all touristy islands. Pick one or 2 that is laid back. And stay out of Athens. It’s a dump.

Athens is nice, Even their protest are orderly. Thessaloniki is a nice place as well but you will only need few days at each. Get on a cruse and see the Mediterranean islands that is amazing.

Funny you mention Crete. We were in Vegas about a month ago and one of the guys there with us has a girlfriend originally from Greece. I've always thought Crete sounded like a cool place since I learned about it in school as a kid. She said it is a beautiful place but people from mainland Greece and those from Crete hate each other. One thinks they're a higher class than the other. Just thought that was interesting, but not surprising.

I would definitely hit up Crete if going that direction.
