    Traditional FSC Week 2 (2020)

Let's practice a hunting situation. If anyone has ever hunted with traditional equipment from a blind, then they know it's "tight", typically requiring us to be all the way toward the back or one side of the blind to draw and shoot. For our scenario, assume you're in a hard-shell blind with narrow vertical "Deerview"-type windows. Say you're after a doe and a shooter shows up, broadside, eating hand corn at 9 yards just out the window to your left. The wind is calm, and you know that when you open the window to shoot, it won't be long until your scent spooks her. Let's say that time will be 10 seconds.

The challenge for this week is to start with bow ready with a nocked arrow at a seated position -- 9 yards from the target (5 for kids), then stand into a crouch and take a step forward to reach an (imaginary) window. Begin counting (1-Mississippi, 2-Mississippi...) as you slowly open the window (3 seconds), then sit back down, draw and shoot an arrow by the 9 second mark. Don't forget that you will likely need to shift your bow with the nocked arrow from your "bow hand" to your other hand to reach for the window without banging it against the side of the blind; and then will need to shift it back into your "bow hand" before shooting.

For the target, just take a piece of 8.5x11 copy paper and draw a vertical line from top to bottom 2" in from each side; then put a 4-1/4" circle a little below the mid-point of the paper, with a dot in the middle. You will be trying to hit closest part of arrow shaft to middle of the center dot and measure for the win. Three days' first-shot tries -- earliest best shot is tie-breaker. Only shots touching or inside the circle count for measure. The lines represent the window-frame -- don't shoot the blind. Outside the circle could wound the deer -- don't do that either.

Have fun. I realize this calls for some imagination, but I bet you all can figure it out.

Target Pic will be added on phone edit below.

Target (feel free to copy and print or just draw your own.)

If anyone can rotate this so lines are vertical and circle is in lower part of page, it would be appreciated. Thanks

        Thanks, Rick!

Regarding the scenario, I would think rehearsing the steps and counting along would be helpful to figure out timing. Remember, you want to move quickly, efficiently, quietly but without actually rushing the shot.

          Just shot Day 1: I don't hate it 15/16".

Did one dry-run rehearsal without releasing arrow, and "9-Mississippi" seemed just right -- not rushed. Thing is, like in real hunting, there's not time to over-think it. Just pretend to open window, switch bow back and forth, then sit, draw, point and shoot. Honestly, I don't actually recall switching bow back to left (bow) hand.

Don't understand why phone pics from Tapatalk have been showing up 90-degrees sideways lately. They're fine on the phone.

Nice shot tradtiger, going to be tough to beat.

Try taking the picture with the phone landscape or edit photo prior to upload.

Thanks, Reb. You can get inside of that.

On pics, yeah, I'll try landscape or editing prior, just never had to do that before. This is a new issue.

Nice shot, Reb! Dead middle, just hard to get it low enough so close.

Day 2: (shot Wednesday) hit the blind, LOL.
Lost focus about "6 Mississippi", rushed draw at 8, then plucked release to get off shot at 9.

Day 3: about 1-1/16" . First shot with all new arrow set-up. A 300 spine Gold Tip Hunter, cut to about 28-1/2", only weighing around 600 grains (as opposed to the other 680-grain 400s at 31-1/4"). Goal was to keep as much mass as possible while shortening length for blind hunting.
