    Gus Engling WMA hunt

Me and my wife got drawn for the spike/doe rifle hunt at Gus Engling WMA in January. Now that its less than a month away, I figure I better quit procrastinating and get us hotel nearby. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to stay? No need for a 5 star hotel, just a place that I don't have to update my "hobo stab insurance" and has a decent breakfast.

Any tips on hunting the WMA would be helpful too.

    Thanks!

Palestine is pretty close with decent services/restuarants. There is one motel right next to the railroad tracks... literally right behind it I would avoid. Train comes thru at like 2-3 in the morning.

As for hunting WMA find you some of the thickest stuff you can find and hunt the edge of it.

Is it best to use a pop-up or tripod/climber?

I am sure a climber would help, but the both times my son got drawn we just built a big brush blind and seemed to be fine. He killed a doe on one trip and missed another on his 2nd trip.

You mean you don’t want to stay in the luxurious 12x12 screened cabin?
Yeah it’s not the most accommodating place. Luckily I grew up about 1-2 miles from it. We used to camp in those shelters. I’ve squirrel hunted that place. It is thick in areas along catfish creek. Some good hunting & ive seen some great bucks on that place. Have fun & good luck

Oak Cove Marina is about 15 minutes from there. They have a motel that gets a lot of use from people fishing Richland Chambers. It’s probably the closest lodging available.

Otherwise you’re right in the middle of a triangle of three towns - Fairfield, Palestine, and Athens. All have hotels.

Fisherman’s point marina is the closest probably. Cabin rentals.

Loaded with deer all over that place. You won't have any troubles. Take a tent!
