Remember that Big 8 that got my attention?

Remember how I said 8s don't really excite me, but this one sure has my attention? Well, this "Big Boy 8" sure seems to like my feed pen. He's hanging out a lot there, often 2-6 hours at night, coming around about every 2-3 days. This particular night he was there for 8 hours.

Much to my opening day surprise, he came in about 5 minutes before my husband pulled up to pick Pistol and I up. It was his first pre night fall visit in over a month. He was about to turn broadside when my husband drove up, just like I asked him to do. Totally my bad. I knew there would be a lot of deer in the area and I thought for sure I'd be shooting a doe and that it would be too dark at 7:30. I totally missed the boat on all of that.

Oh well, it was just opening day and I've got until January.

The other buck in the first photo has 4 on one side and is a spike on the other. Three other bucks look just like him. They will all be removed asap.

Great 8!! Love big 8's for sure. Be careful taking out those others. We had a couple bucks last year that were wonky like that and have grown something good this year. Plus those seem young, won't hurt to leave them. One buck last year had a screwed up side with basically a brow and a spike and this year he is a whopper. Sometimes they hurt their antlers during the growth period or get an injury on their body and it screws them up but it isn't always permanent.

I've pretty much been persuaded to the nutrition>genetics side.

It just sucks that protein is so expensive...

good luck with the 8 point. Text your ride when you are ready to be picked up.
I would not be shooting those little deer until I saw a third set of horns.
Course I get to shoot lots of pigs !

I don't normally advocate shooting little bucks but I've seen the daddy of those little bucks. On year 2, they will have 2-3 x 1-2" points on the spike side and be tall on the non-spike side. On year 3 they will be a little bigger, but the spike side will go straight up. Year 4 - same thing. They will never be legal. The widest they will ever get is 10".

Now I have 4 years of those dang bucks running around reproducing. Most of our little bucks have 4-6 points and are very even on both sides.

And as far as that 8 being a good "cull" buck? Ouch! Maybe where you are but where I'm at that's a nice buck.

These are our normal 2 year olds.

You know your deer and I am not a biologist.
But I think young deer, especially late born, twin fawns deserve a chance to see
What they can do. Our lease has few mature bucks, so we want them all to reach another age class and possibly blossom.

                            Good luck on that 8
