USFS antlerless permit on Sam Houston national Forrest

So far this is the only drawing I’ve won this year. I’ve never hunted here so I’m looking forward to it. Any tips on where to start or what to avoid? I’ve never hunted public land in open season either, so this is all a learning experience for me. Thanks.

If you have OnX or a map from the forest service, trace all of the FS roads and hiker/4wheeler/equine trails and then focus on the pockets of woods that are as far from them as possible. There are tons of hardwoods, plenty of thickets for bedding, and numerous water sources in the Sam. Find a combination of all three in one of those roadless/trailess pockets and you should be golden

What ever you do.....do not block and/or park in front of any gates, you can park on the side but leave access for the Forest Service and Game Wardens to enter. Make sure your wear your orange every time you get out of the vehicle and never have a loaded gun in the camps or on the roads while traveling to and from hunting areas; completely unloaded. Be sure you read the rules and regulations for SHNF. I am telling you this because that are very strict and they will get you if the can.

          Good luck!!!

Forgot to add pipelines to that list of areas to avoid

And if you wander upon a spot you think someone may be hunting, please move on, there is plenty of woods out there to hunt. Just be courteous.
