    Tent or Hammock?

We are starting to get our gear together for our elk hunt in a couple of weeks. Two of us are planning on spiking for a day or so to get further in and hopefully stay with the bulls. I’ve got both.

    What would you do?

Whatever you are most proficient at.

I prefer hammock, but it takes me awhile. In your scenario, I'd only take the tarp from the hammock.

I prefer hammock for general camping in Texas but tent is better choice for weather variability and potentially keeping gear dry on a hunt.

My good buddy I elk hunt with tried the hammock in August one year up there. He told me he will never do that again. Said he about froze to death in a hammock and a 20 degree bag. Said he spent most of the night up by the fire trying to keep/get warm. Take it for what's it's worth. We like a tent for the rainy days.

We will have a base camp to hunt from. I’ve got a good zero degree mummy bag. I hope to find some bulls and stay with them until one of us gets it done.

Maybe look into a packable under quilt ?

Tent. You can always unzip your bag to cool down.... doesn't work the other way.

I would say light weight 2 man tent to get out of the weather-wind, rain.
Light weight air mattress to get off the ground and for warmth.

I always remember my friend went with me to Wyoming on a back country fishing trip and his tarp tent hammock split into which sent him to the ground at 3 o’clock in the morning and he had to sleep on the ground for the next 5 days.

1 manTent for remote and big tent by the truck.
Lots of time in those woods and I'd hate to rely on a tarp and hammocks

I never sleep worth a crap in s hammock for more than about 45 min. But I sleep like a baby in a tent, so for me it’s a no brainer

                          Hammock or bivey with tarp.

I get really bad sciatica pain sleeping in a hammock. I tried it on the beach after spending $200 for a good hammock and ended up in the truck. It was miserable. I’ll stick with my ultralight tent or even my sleeping pad, bag and waterproof bivy
