    Greasing Winch Up Feeders

What’s the best grease to use for the gears on winch up feeders?

First thing that pops into my head is marine grease...

Thin film spray lube! Gearing and cable
It leaves a coating but not a big mess

That's what I use. I doubt it makes a ton of difference in the grand scheme of things, butit sure as heck made it a lot quieter!

Why grease them. How many times a year are they cranked up/down? I don’t see the need.

I spray garage door oil on the cable and gears. Makes it twice as easy to raise a loaded 55 gallon drum.

Whatever I got in my truck, usually soak it down couple times a year with WD-40

If you run your feeders year round and raise and lower to adjust timer/check batteries etc it is a good idea. Cranking 300 lbs of corn it’s a good thing to have smooth gears. Been doing it for 20 years.

White lithium grease spray. Coat the cables, pulleys, and rollers also.

I use corrosion-X HD (green can).
Sticks to the gears longer than most. Kinda like grease in a spray can.

Why in the world wouldn’t you? Nothing scared me more than those **** winch up feeders. Give me a tailgate or a ladder...To many moving parts after 5 years for me.
Hit it with some lithium grease every time you fill them is what I would do. I would also hit the pullies and winch as well. I would also try to start talking all of my buddies into stand and fills. Game changer for sure.

There is a need. They get cranked up/down a dozen times a year and the gears need some serious help as they sit and bake in the sun between usages.

We've had a couple of the cables break on the Hang 'Em High. The cables are being replaced on all 30ish feeders this summer. I'd hate to be under one when it snapped. These have been up 16 years.

Corrosion-X is some good stuff! I use the red can at work all the time.
