    Age this guy

We bought a small place last year and are trying to be more management minded. Last year we committed to not taking any deer to give us time to get a better feel for the population. Also plan to let them age. I’m terrible at aging so I thought I’d ask for some help. What’s the age on this one?

Hard to tell off just those pictures. Do you have any pictures of him facing the camera?

Just going off those I’d say mature. Deep brisket, and his neck goes down into his brisket. Looks like a little sag in his jaw. I wouldn’t make a call just off those pictures, but if I had to guess he looks like a older deer.

I added a third picture, these are the best I have at this point.

New picture helped a lot, and really showed how deep his brisket really is. That looks like a old deer to me. I also see a pot belly in the new picture you posted.

I agree with above, mature. I'd say at least 6.

Looks mature to me. Starting out, rather than trying to age them to a specific age, just try to put them in three categories. Young, middle aged or mature. The more you see, the better you will get at aging.

Thanks for the input, we watched him last year and I guessed he was 4-5. We seem to have some big bodied deer compared to what I was used to seeing at leases in the past. I spent most of my time hunting Bosque county, Jack county deer seem a little bigger in general.

I’d say 5, looks a little heat stressed. This time of year makes it tough to age. I’ve have 4 year old deer look 10 and 7/8 year old deer look 4

I'm leaning towards 3-4. His back end is big, no belly, smaller shoulders. Only thing that is throwing me is his brisket in that first pic.
