    Shooting used cedar arrows?

Looking at picking up some old Fred Bear arrows as I'd like to see how they fly. Even if they don't fly well I'd like to hang them on the wall with my old bows. I've read the "horror stories" of cedar splintering or breaking on release and was wondering if there is anything specific to look at/for when examining older wood shafts. I know to look for water damage or warping so that's taken care of but can I flex them a bit like you do with carbons and listen for cracking or something like that?

    Thank you in advance.
    Richard.

Sorry bud. I have no clue. They may be more solid now than new.

You will have no problems you would get struck by lightening before a cedar would break on shot. Unless they are really really light spines with a really heavy bow.

If they are old I would be wary of shooting them. I have seen a few cedars break on the shot. If you do want to shoot them, flex the arrow and listen for any noise. While holding them flexed, check to see that no cracks are evident and no splinters have risen.

Living in Michigan we are rich in old Bear stuff including arrows. When I find them at yard sales the feathers are usually shot so I carefully stripped them, strip the paint and then reseal them with clear coat fletch them up and use them. I have had some interesting finds under all that paint. Arrows that would never be used if not for the paint. Wished I had a few good ones to send you for your wall.

Lucked out and got these at a yard sale. Keep trying, you will find some. I would give you one, but don't want to break a dozen.

Give them a slight flex and sniff, if cracked you'll smell the cedar even with old arrows.
