    Truck Racks

I need a better way to haul the kayaks around this summer. Trailer is out, can’t always find a place to park it. The Thule racks look nice but dang pricey. I have thought about welding up my own but time is tough to come by at times. Thule racks would require me to remove my bedcover which I like for security. Is there a rail only option? Suggestions?

Backflip which is a major POS. It will be replaced. I just like the security of a cover.

I designed a bed cover that I could mount a kayak carrier on. I have not built it yet, too many other projects going on. I wanted a way to keep everything locked up in the bed and very hard to get into, then a place to carry a couple of kayaks on top. I came up with a idea that I like a lot, but I need to have some spare time to build it.
Tomorrow, I need to draw up a headache rack. I might draw up a kayak rack also.

I know when I bought my retractable cover I saw several offerings that you could select a different set of rails which would allow you to run racks and access stake pockets. Its been so long ago I don't remember if it was just retractables or if it was an option on flip ups as well. there is also a company that makes a quick detach cover I think they are called paragon or something like that. Probably not what you were looking for and you may already be aware of all that

Thanks for all the info. I’ll look at the retractable covers, a new cover is on the list too. I know diamondback covers offer a bolt on rack. If I’m going to be $3k deep might just buy a trailer though

Thule tracrac looks perfect... other than the price tag

I had a buddy build this one with square tubing. It works perfect. I bolt it to the side of my bed ( the holes were already there).

It's crooked in the pic cause I snapped a bolt on the corner brace right behind driver side cab. I drilled the holes bigger and use a thicker bolt now. No issues, and the bars gong front to back connect with a locking pin. It make it easier to take it all apart and store in my shed.

Thanks junior. I'm leaning DIY route for sure now. Just cant stomach the price tag otherwise. Yours looks nice.

Ya the tubing is cheap, and my buddy put it together, so no cost there. I found the kayak racks on "let go", or "offer up" apps. that saved me a lot too. I like the Thule racks, but didn't want to spend that much.
