3/4 ton gas trucks. Need opinions.

From the guys that have them, what are your opinions, like, dislikes, complaints? Looking at getting a new hunting truck. Only interested in Ford F-250 or Chevy 2500. Crew cab, 4x4 will put front end replacement on it and other than that will be pretty much stock. Will add AT tires, but they will be stock size. Not real concerned about mileage, but would be interest to know what you’re getting. I don’t pull real heavy weight and have a diesel for my everyday car if I need to pull heavy. This will be for around the ranch and just want the bigger 3/4 ton over another half ton. Thanks.

My 3/4 ton Chevy gasser requires a back brace to ride in it. But it does have the 20” factory wheels on it

Curious as to why you want a 3/4 ton gas over another 1/2 ton gas truck?

Only major differences will be how much weight the bed is rated for. And that the 3/4 ton will be a noticeably rougher ride around the ranch.

The 1/2 ton will have about the same towing capacity nowadays, and like you said you have a diesel for that anyway.

Do you just want the 3/4 ton for looks? Only advantage I can think of is that you can put an extra 500lb of feed in the bed of the truck.

I’m a car dealer for all brands.

For 3/4 ton segment, I’d say go Chevy 2500 HD.

Someone mentioned it’s the same as a 1/2 ton but only can carry more payload. Not true.

Chevy gives you a bigger 6.0 litre engine (400) basically a punched out 350. Power galore. The thing I’ve always loved about Chevy 3/4 ton was their tranny options which for me, back in the day towing my 20 foot Stratos201 bass boat with tandem axles @ high speeds on the highway was awesome.

Someone mentioned a rough ride ? You bet, it is. Why ? It’s the HD ( heavy duty) suspension of course. You’re not riding Cadillac when going junk yard dog, whether it’s Chevy, Ford or Dodge.

So to me ? It’s the 350 engine block punched out and the tranny that give the edge over Ford and Dodge. All 3 make great stuff. Gas in the Ford and Dodge imho lag behind, but in diesel are great.

I had the chevy 2500HD 4x4 with the 6.0 gas for about 260K miles. It never had issues. It was an awful stiff ride. The potholes are the worst. I know you don't care about gas mileage, but I got about 13 average with mostly highway and about 4mpg hauling a stock trailer or a travel trailer. It came with the 245 tires, I went back to the 265 they use to put on them because it looks a lot better. I had Michelin tires for the first 200k miles and they were great. I put coopers on it for the end and they were good too. It went everywhere and you only got stuck when you bottomed out the frame in the mud.

You’ve got to be the first person I’ve ever heard that calls the 6.0 powerful, or give it the nod over either the 6.2 or 6.4 gasser options from the competition. It’s reliable, but that’s about all it does. I’ve had 5 6.0s by the way, and have well over half a million miles on them. The 6.0 is a dog. A reliable dog, but still a dog. The good news is mileage doesn’t change much for anything. 11 mpg empty or hook on the 20’ flatbed and get 10.8 lol

I have a 2015 chevy 2500HD Z71 I like everything about it except the 6.6' bed get a full 8' bed. Mine came with 20" wheels I changed those out real quick to 17" and put a set of ridge grapplers on it improved the ride a bunch it's still rough as hell though in the pasture or on ranch roads it rides good on the hwy. I need to put a front end replacement on it that may calm it down a bit. I will say this about the 6.0 gas mileage SUCKS 14 to 15 hwy 11 in town hook up a trailer and it drops to 8 to 10 mpg that 6.0 is a bullet proof engine though

Biggest difference between the Ford and Chev is if the check engine light comes on you will have to take the Ford somewhere and spend a couple grand on it to get it fixed. With the Cheby you just put a piece of black tape over the light and keep on driving it.

I got 335k out of my 2011 6.0 GM...it's a dog on the giddy-up but feel it's the most reliable engine available for longevity. Tranny gave out but engine was still solid.

16 F250 6.2 4x4. So far I like the truck. Gas mileage sucks and its a typical HD truck as far as the ride. I have 35" tires so that hurts mileage but getting 12-13 on the highway and 9-10 towing. 9 in town stop/go. This is my first Ford truck so we will see on longevity. I usually keep my trucks for 10-11 years.

I won’t go as far as to say the 6.2 is more reliable, but I do think it’s just as reliable. There are tons of 6.2s with 300k running around here in the oil patch without issue. The 6.0 has definitely proven itself reliable though.

I've got two trucks I use on my ranch one is a 1/2 ton 2005 dodge 1500 4x4 crew cab and the other is my F250. The F250 is great on the rough ranch roads if I have about 1500 lbs of corn in the back, otherwise I will drive the old rattletrap dodge

The F 250 is a 2012 4x4 crew cab with a 6.2 gas and since Texas is pretty flat and I don't pull heavy loads over 15K often I got away from the diesel

I have no regrets, but if I was you I'd be looking 1/2 ton for running ranch roads
