    McMullen/Tilden Area Question/Opinions

We are close to signing a hunting lease on a ranch in McMullen County south of Tilden. I will spare the details until everything is signed and done but I wanted to get opinions on things to beware of in the area as we are going to view the place soon. On the same token, what are good things to look for in the area?

The acres per hunter is good and the game cam pictures sent to me show some awesome deer.

We have hunted the hill country for the last 10+ years and know what we want in a deer lease but have never leased in South Texas.

If Max's still has their "crunchy fries" on the menu, that is worth the deer lease location in itself

June will make 15 years since we bought our place in McMullen. Feel free to shoot me any questions or concerns. Generally we have someone at the ranch all the time so if you ever need anything, just let me know. Great County. Good-Great deer depending on where you are. Turkeys are hit and miss. Closer to the river (either Nueces or Frio) the better turkey hunting you will have.

You off of 16 or Old Fowlerton Road? Like I said, shoot me a PM and I am happy to help with any questions you have. Max's is a great little local dive restaurant (and just about the only thing in Tilden). They have actually recently added a new Gas Station and a hotel on the North side of town. Overall, it is a pretty quite little town with very few people. I have some buddies who own a place about 10 miles south of Tilden and we are just a little bit East of town.

I hunted just west of hwy 16 and 624 by the Nueces. The area you are looking at is some of my favorite country in all of south Texas. Only issue in the area is rain if you are anywhere near the river bottom, but if you have a 4 wheeler/UTV with a winch you should be fine. We saw very few illegals but there was some poaching since we had highway and river frontage.

Forgot about the rattlebugs. We didn’t see many but when we did they were pretty big.

I hunt in Tilden alot at a friends. Echoing turkey is good if you are close to river, deer can be amazing or average(I hunt low fence though), Max's is good but if they're closed you can always grab a bite at wheelers or pilot. Town seems to bustle Friday night, usually a band or DJ at Max's. Sunday alot of places are closed. If you like craft beer the Valero has a better selection but nothing great, bring your own.

I’ve hunted in the northwest portion and southeast portions. Both had great deer and good numbers. The place in the SE portion had serious toads. Great brush across most of McMullen. Just beware of some ranchettes closer to town and right off main roads.

Good area for sure. Most deer in McMullen county have long tines which score good Look for lots of black brush and thick cover and water. Oil traffic has messed up a lot of the leases in the area but can't blame the owners more money in oil than leasing to hunters. Some areas have lots of mesquites and not so much black brush. Looking for something for myself in the area without paying an arm and a leg.

I have hunted in Tilden on our ranch for 45 years and wouldn't hunt anywhere else. Good deer numbers most years but drought has hurt the numbers some years. Good genetics on our place and around us. We feed protein year round and our stock tanks are full this year so Im happy. Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Typically big deer and don’t be fooled, the deer are used to oilfield traffic. We have tankers in/out of our place daily and does not bother the deer. Now the occasional ridden ATV/UTV will spook them big time
