    Truck question

I have a 2007 Silverado 1500. I have never done any of the "required" 100k mile service, fluids flushed, and all of that stuff that the dealer recommends having done. I never thought that I needed it and my truck runs great. I have heard some people say that it does no good and is actually worse for the truck to have it done. I was wondering if anyone on here had it done and if you saw an increase in performance, gas mileage, etc. Was also looking to see if anyone had any negative effects from having it done? Just trying to gauge to see if I should do it or not. I am going to keep the truck until the wheels fall off, so a little insight is always good to have. I have right at 150k miles on the truck.

    Thanks for the help.

2005 GMC single cab 8 cylinder automatic 148,000.
Just put a K&N filter on it & I swear boogie woogies now. Don't know about gas mileage cause I don't keep track. My fuel economy "thing" has been stuck on 17.7 for years.
The K&N air filter is the only "upgrade" I ever done to it.
Only brand new vehicle I ever owned.
    PM is worth it IMO.
I also believe in. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
At 100,000 had wires, plugs, radiator and transmission flushed plus a few other things done that were recommended at 100,000 miles. Cost me $300 to have it all done?
Me I drive my vehicles till they drop or my wife wrecks them.
These new "computer vehicles" with "fake oil" are way more reliable and last lots longer. I'm hopping my 05 GMC gas powered PU will last 300,000. By then it should be an antique?
Almost 150,000 and the brakes are still at 50%?????? Most expensive thing I've ever done is buy new tires?

Got an 02 Ford at 190K. At 100K I spent about $300 on the above services you mentioned (fluids changed, diff flushed, etc). Didn't notice anything but gave peace of mind. Will do again at 200K

If you have not been changing fluids DO NOT flush anything.

Other than that, change spark plugs and wires, check steering components, brake pads. And keep on rolling.

My 07 suburban is about 130k. All the steering components look great still. I have done plugs and wires, drop in dry air filter, and i added a tune to shut off the AFM because I was drinking some oil.

Can you elaborate a little more? Also, I am going to do a tune. Who did you do yours through to delete the AFM? I think I am going to change the wires, plugs, u-joints, rear differential oil (because it has a little water in it from the dang, flat boat ramp), and a few other things?

Does anyone have any recommendations as to why or why not to do the above mentioned fluid changes or 100k mile changes?

              Nah....vehicle maintenance is overrated.

I would shy away from messing with any transmission fluid. All the rest, coolant, axle oil, fuel system etc should probably be done.

This do not flush the transmission for sure. Just a fluid/filter change.

Had an 05 Silverado Z71. Possibly the same engine, and definitely the same transmission you have. Bought it used with around 75K miles on it, and ran problem free until 100K. Decided to do some preventative maintenance on it per the manual. Did all new fluids, including the transmission fluid. Everything went great for about a month (1500 miles or so), then all of a sudden I didnt have 3rd or 4th gear. Had the transmission rebuilt, and the guy that rebuilt it told me that what happens is that the clutches were worn out, but there was probably enough friction material left in the old fluid to keep the clutches gripping, and that when I put the new fluid in it did not have the same grip. Since trans fluid is a bit of a solvent anyway, it probably washed any remaining clutch material off the clutch bands and into the filter; thus causing the slippage. He showed me the bands and they were almost polished smooth and shiny. He told me that unless you are flushing the fluid every time the manual says to (15-30K miles), dont ever do it. This guy has been rebuilding transmissions for over 30 years, so I would trust his experience.

As far as engine maintenance, if you have the 07 classic without the fuel saver (4cyl) mode, Ide just change the oil, maybe do a seafoam treatment (gas, oil, intake) check the plugs, and let her go. Dont know about the 07.5 with the fuel saver mode. Heard a lot of bad things about them when they hit the 100K mark. Mostly oil consumption and such.

For fluid changes after 100k, definitely no flushing, especially if you haven't been doing it. It leads to leaks that may have not been present before. Not the fault of the shop performing the work, just nature of the flushing. At 130k, I did all fluids (Except Diff's and radiator, I will do those at 150k)

Flushing the tranny can open up a whole bunch of issues and dislodge things that you don't want moving around in there.

I just got a hypertech off here, disabled afm, adjusted tire size, and firmed up shift pressure.

If you want any added performance go with a blackbear custom tune.

Thanks for that insightful input. Really helped me out. Sounds like you really know what you are talking about. I swear, some people's kids!'

On another note, thanks to all who have provided their help. Anyone else have any recommendations?

Is it the 5.3 with the AFM system?

Im driving an 07 Classic Silverado 5.3L. When I hit the century mark, I did fluids and the one that surprised me the most was coolant swap. It actually moved the temp needle back running about 5 degrees cooler.

I also recommend fuel and air filters. Went K&N air filter and I'm sure its placebo, but it "feels" like its got a bit more giddy up and go!

Brake fluid swap felt like it put new life in my brakes, but that likely could have just be due to the bleed process.

I second staying away from trans flush! Take it to a real transmission shop and have them drop the pan, replace fluid/filter. My dad had a flush done on a 2005 Avalanche and within 500 miles burned up the trans. Shop that replaced it, stated debris stuck in a passage and stopped fluid flow. Lesson learned.
