Any X-Ray Techs Here? A couple questions

My wife has been an NCT (and phlebotomist) for about 14 years and is wanting to become an X-ray tech. We know she’ll need schooling but unsure where to start. Besides enrolling into a major university (where we live, there are none), what are her options? Thanks for any input!

Radiologic Technology school is usually a two year program however you have to apply and get accepted in. Most schools have certain prerequisite courses that you need to complete prior to the actual program starting. Rad tech programs are in community colleges usially rather than in universities. I would do a google search and find a program nearby and talk to a counselor at the college to get started. Some of her medical background may cover some of her prerequisites as well.

They don’t offer it at our local community college (Navarro). We’ll check schools a little further out.

Quickly research Radiology Technician and Technologist Schools in Texas including profiles of radiology technologist programs and state requirements.

I went to El Centro in Dallas. Can be competitive to get in and there’s a good amount of ore reqs. As for the job itself it’s pretty good. Class material is not too difficult

Thanks for that link! Unfortunately the closest school is 40 minutes away, without traffic. I’ll pass this info on to her.
                Thanks y’all!

I'm registered ct Mr and xray
There is so many other modalities to jump into once u get xray cert.. While they all pay pretty good u won't get rich... most techs I train start out at around 25-28hr and the pay goes up into 40s for most techs now that will hustle. Your wife has a big advantage being that she has nct exp..
While most hospitals and major facilities wont hire them bc radiation guidelines I have seen some great techs that were for lack of better term a waste bc they didn't go get there cert and degree...it is competitive most community colleges have 300-400 applications and only take 30 or so so can't stress enough how important the prerequisites are to get good grades.
Good luck and pm if I can help w any ?.. I did my school at del mar in cc

To add, if she found a teaching facility(Hospital), she could sign up to shadow technologist. My friends daughter is trying to get accepted into the Sonography program and has 80 hours volunteer work for her resume, plus Certified Medical Assistant. Any of these will increase her chances of getting bumped to the front of those 30 that get chosen.
Alternatively, your wife could check out dedicated Ultrasound Programs. Most accredited programs also run 2 years. Main thing is to make sure after doing all the class work that she can challenge the ARDMS Registry.
                    Good luck.

Having her NCT should bump her to the top of the pile in the application process I would imagine. Especially if she has actually been using it. We got out NCTs after we had been in the program for a year. We worked just like RT's aside from the couple of limitations. Nothing like doing 8 hours of clinicals and then clocking in for another 8. Work all day. Get paid for half of it.

I went to TJC. I think BTLowry did as well. They have a good program. The clinical site is much more valuable than the school though. I graduated very very competent in the field because I had been basically already doing the job full time for 2 years. My clinical site used us like we were RT's. And the RT's were lazy for the most part.

I do Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy now, which an xray license is required for in texas.

A side note, I don't believe CT, MRI, Nuke Med, etc. falls under the Xray umbrella anymore. You used to be able to go to xray school and then cross train into other modalities and take the registry. I think they require you go through an additional program now, even you are an RT.
