Colorado Bend State Park Youth Hunt

My son and I just got back from the Colorado Bend State Park Youth hunt yesterday and had a blast. This was the first year he was eligible for the draw hunts and he was lucky enough to get drawn in his first year. This was also my first time in hunting on public land and man, it is definitely a whole new ballgame.

We got done with orientation and drew compartment 4. After we were shown the boundaries of the compartment we visited with the other groups to decide where everyone wanted to hunt. Most of them wanted to hunt near the back of the compartment so we decided to head back to the front of the compartment and see where we could set up. Compartment 4 is very thick in most places and we walked around for a little over two hours trying to find an open area to set up in. We struggled to find many open areas and after a couple of hours decided it was time to go back to a spot we had seen earlier and set up. The area we picked was shaped like an hour glass and was 65 yards long.

We drug all the gear in and got set up and then headed back to the truck for a sandwich and a quick break before heading to the blind. We didn't see any activity for the first hour but then saw some moment in the brush and after getting a look it was a good size doe. She fed behind the bushes for 8-10 minutes and then stepped into the clearing. Took her another few minutes to turn broadside but when she did my son was ready and dropped her where she stood. She dressed at 65 lbs and the camp staff aged her at 3.5.

It was a really rewarding hunt with the limited time to scout and get set up and and such a special time with my son. The doe ended up being the only deer we saw in our two hunts (hunted again Sunday morning) but I was thrilled he was able to connect.

I learned a lot on my first public hunting experience and am hoping he can draw again next year so we can do it all over again.

Colorado Bend State Park is a beautiful park and the staff were all really great to be around and helpful.Click image for larger version

Congrats on the hunt... you are correct, it is a very thick place.

Way to go! That place is great for youth hunts. Both my kids shot their first bucks there on the same day,

Awesome pics. Did it my boys several years ago. Thick is a good word. They still have it broken into only 8 or so compartments and put multiple groups in each??

They had it broken down into 5 compartments and I believe there were 24 youth on this hunt. We were in compartment 4 with 4 other hunters.

Cherish it, very hard to draw there, been applying there my self almost 20 years, and the kids since they could apply at 8 years old, never draw. Oldest only has a few more years left in the youth category.
