    DIY small game heads (picture)

I know some of you have made your own, SwampRabbit comes to mind, and wondered if ya'll have tried something like this. If so how do they hold up? I'm concerned about the screw breaking off in the insert if I hit a rock.

From reading the original thread they weigh in at 150 +/-2 grains so I figure they'll be fine for hunting rabbits and things.

    Thoughts?

Never thought about it as I just always use judo heads or rubber blunts but then that is with 100 grain heads. Guess I need to rethink for 175s.

What you made there will be deadly on small game. Here is a link to similar DIY heads I posted a few years ago.

I have killed squirrels, rabbits and big boar coons with them - absolutely eviscerates them.

        I need 175 grains.

I haven't made them yet. I'm headed to Home Depot to get the pieces. If I can find an arrow scale or something similar I'll weigh them out.

DRT the screws come longer so if I can I'll build a couple of them in the store and see how close to 175 I can get and post up the parts/pieces you'll need if you like.

That would be fine I'm just behind the curve on equipment and with buying the ranch being first priority I will be behind for a while I guess.

Like those, Junkers! Looks like #8-32 T-nuts, with matching (approx.) 1" screw and some plumbing valve seat washers.

As far as the screw breaking off in the insert, the zinc screw is stronger than the aluminum insert (or a brass one, probably). Also, don't shoot the rock; shoot the rabbit!

Also, you could fine-tune the weight by adding nuts or washers. You could use it with just the T-nut and screw against the insert for lightest tip and work up from there, adding steel or rubber washers and/or nuts to get to desired weight.

I figure brass washers would add more weight with slightly less mass.

I dropped one of my spare inserts in my work pants for tomorrow and hope to hit HD on the way home to see about building a couple of these. I've got squirrels out back destroying my deer corn bags and didn't want to use a field point or broadhead on them.

Yeah, a $15 broadhead would be a little overkill on a rodent.

FYI, a single #8-32x1-1/2 screw with a nut weighs in at about 70 grains. This doesn't include any washers or a T-nut. So, it shouldn't be hard to get up to 175 grains, DRT.

I will work on it. After missing 5 doe shots I figure I need to work on the rabbits a little to get my "game" face on. But I never thought about the weight difference. Thanx for the thread Junkers88.

Yes, I have made those... Not that exact design (rubber washers...) but with the T-nut, screw and nuts behind it. I made them the same time I made the wing nut heads.

There was something about them that I didn't fancy. They whistle if I remember correctly... which is not a big deal when using them with spiral flu-flus cause spiral flu-flus whistle.

I don't actually like the penetration either out of my 50# bow... I liked the wingnut better.

In the field, I started off with the wingnut design and like it enough that I haven't bothered to try the other until recently. But I missed a squirrel with it so I couldn't tell you how it performed on impact.

When it comes to hitting rock... I wouldn't be worried about the head... I would worry about the insert/shaft. For that you could foot them.

(I have broken a G5 SGH a couple times... but I don't like them for anything other than out of a compound.)
