    Prepping traps for this winter

So I have noticed a steady decline of turkeys on one of our river bottom places since my brother in law quit trapping coyotes and coons I decided to get another dozen MB550 offsets to run a few dirt hole sets for coyotes mixed in with my dp traps to work on the coons. I have had a pile of coons on my trailcams as well as a few coyotes, so I figured I'd do my part to help manage them to give the turkeys a little better chance.

First off after getting them in I boiled them in a little dawn to degrease the factory grease on them.

I hung them outside for about 4 days spraying them with a water hose once in the morning and once in the evening to let them rust a little.

I put a liquid bottle of of Petes sleepy creek black dye in about 5 gallons of water and boiled the traps for a 1/2 hour or so.

Pulled them out an hung them to dry for a hour or so.

After they were dry I began dipping them individually in full metal jacket. I really like this stuff better than wax. I dip my traps 3 times each, about 30 minutes inbetween dips, then hang them up to dry.

Here is the finished product. They were dry after hanging in 90 degree heat for a couple of hours. I'll let them hang for a day or so to guarantee they are completely cured. I will add a couple more swivels and about 5' of #3 chain as well.

Thanks for the tips on how to do this! I have a box full of rusty traps that need some dye!

Those traps look great! I just started trapping and bought some mb550s I hope they are as good as they look. The old trapper that is helping me get started said he has used pecan husks to dye his traps before and I am going to try it on my new traps. Has anyone tried using pecan husks as a dye/coloring?

Haven't heard of pecans. Black Walnut hulls are a standard for dyeing. He might have been confused on which nut

He said it works the same as black walnut hulls but the color is not as dark.

Very interesting. What exactly is the full metal jacket?

Its an atmospheric corrosion preventative that's ingredients are diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate. Dries clear and is odorless works like a champ!

                            That last one looks nice.
My dls Sleepy Creeks wouldn't rust (or take dye) very well until they spent some time in the ground. I degreased them and even sprayed them with white vinegar.

A thought for species to target in trapping

At the last Safari Club show in town, I spoke to a Biologist. He mentioned the following regarding quail and turkey's (Eggs/hatches)
                              - Racoon's and possums hunt like a great bird dog in a back and forth fashion. Deadly on quail eggs and turkey eggs.
                              - Coyotes hunt in a straight line - not effective for finding nest / eggs. Coyotes help with Racoon and possum control.
                              - Overall it was his belief to target coon and possum to improve eggs and hatch success
