    Public Lands

One topic that I'm surprised doesn't get discussed very often on this site is public land. I see hunters from other western States talking about this pretty often. It seems like to me they are worried about federal land getting transferred to the state and the state ends up selling the land to private parties. Nevada has sold a ton of acres of public land to private buyers.

I know in Texas it is mostly private but a lot of people hunt the national forests and grasslands. Does it worry anyone else?

The US Government owns entirely too much land, period. In Nevada it owns 80% of the state and in the Western US it owns 47% of total acreage.

But it is land for everyone to hunt, fish, and enjoy right?

Agreed. I don't see the problem with Federal land as long as it's open to public use.

I'm not gonna get into the politics of it but I will say this: I grew up in Southern NM, surrounded by BLM and National Forest. We could explore, backpack, hunt, shoot, ride 4 wheelers and dirt bikes, cruise old two tracks in the trucks for days, all 20 minutes from the house, and not see another person.
It is extremely hard to that in Texas, unless you pay to play.

              That sounds awesome stoof.

I'd just hate to see Texas lose the land they do have. I know Texas isn't Nevada or Oregon and our economy is probably better but I guess it's always a possibility.

Me and the wife have talked about leaving Texas when she gets out of nursing school. She was raised in WV. This is the only thing we both miss living in this great state. We want our kids to know what wide open spaces really are all about.

I completely agree with you, I was raised in Nevada til the time I was 17. Our property backed up to blm land. I always rode my four wheeler and horses all over those mountains. My favorite part was loading up and go way off in the mountains and camp for 4 or 5 days and never see a soul! Definitely the only thing I wish was different about Texas.

It is not that folks in Texas don't care they just are not very familiar with the impact the lands have on what we do locally. I posted the below thread this past weekend...........and not surprisingly I had ONE response.
