Aoudad with a stick, who's done it.

Well I'm a few weeks away from my hog/Aoudad hunt in Texas. I'm getting weak and thinking about grabbing my compound. Need some inspiration.

Well if you don't want a challenge or an extra boost of accomplishment then grab the compound......

If you're confident with the trad equipment I'd stick with it.

Seriously enough. I backed out of the stick my last day to hunt Aoudad and stuck one with the compound. Early that morning and more then close enough to have done it with my recurve. I enjoyed the hunt, but still not the same. If I ever have another chance the compound is staying home.
Keep shooting and relax. Don't bale out of a boat that isn't about to sink.

Shot a Black Hawiian (about the same size) before with recurve. 10 yards with complete pass thru.

Shot many an aoudad, probably 4 or 5 with my recurve. These were all taken out of blinds and on our place in the hill country Low fence. The last picture is of the one my uncle shot.

You can spot and stalk them and I could have taken a few if I was actually trying to spot and stalk them but usually I'm in a hurry to to get to a blind to chase whitetail.

The type of country matters a ton when hunting them S&P.

                What ranch is your hunt?

I ain't gonna lie. When going on a hunt that you paid good money for, there is that little voice that whispers that it would be better to come home with something than come home empty handed. This whisper builds and eats away at your confidence in your original decision.

But it is a toss up, you can bring a rifle and never get a shot. Bring a compound and have an shot present itself at 7 yards. The question is, what is more important to you about the hunt you booked. Killing an aoudad, or killing and aoudad with your trad bow? It is never a guarantee, either way.

I got this itch now to kill a turkey. I gave up the compound only a year ago. I wouldn't think of hunting turkey with a compound or a shotgun... I want to kill a turkey with my trad bow. Don't get me wrong, if someone gave me the opportunity to kill a turkey for free with a shotgun, I would do it. But if I am paying, I am hunting it with a stick and string.

But then I think about elk hunting. And I'll be honest, that aint cheap, and I'd really really like to have an elk in the freezer... For that hunt, maybe coming back with an elk is more important than killing an elk with my trad bow...

I guess what I am getting at is this. It has gotten to the point where for the most part, I want to go hunting so I can go hunting with my trad bow. But every hunt is different.

                Not very inspiring, I know.

Ballgame thats awesome! I'm going to the Diamond C, on this trip so shots should be pretty close. I've hunted them 3 times before, passed on a medium sized ram the first stalk ever in west texas. Thought this was easy, little did I know that would be the last one I'd have a chance at....... I'm shoot really well with the stick actually, how tough are they to run an arrow though.

Through, and in, are two totally different situations. Not hard to get an arrow into the boiler, But I have yet to hear of anyone getting an arrow completely through. I am unfamiliar with Diamond C but sounds like a good opportunity to use the stick.

The second picture I posted was a 100% pass through and I used a grizzley broadhead, he ran about 40 yards and crashed but there was very little blood compared to the blood I get with my Palmer extreme cut broadheads. (its a bigger and heavier Muzzy Phantom)

The other 3 fell within 50 yards or so with tons of blood and the arrows were still in the animals but still penetrated through the opposite side.

Aoudad are tough animals to kill and they can run a long ways very fast even with an arrow that is well placed.

My uncles aoudad ran 2 miles and was found by our neighbor and it was an awesome shot just behind the shoulder.

I've had great luck on killing them and I won't tell you that I've recovered everyone I've hit, But a bad shot high and back is a bad shot even if your using a rifle.

I like to hit them just behind the shoulder and a tad on the higher side. Their lungs tend to angle more up like other African animals.

Also they dont tend to jump the string like a whitetail does. Only one of the 4 I I posted pictures of noticeably moved after I released the string.

If you end up tracking one and lose the trail Look up! Ive seen these things jump up a vertical 8ft rock face and run another 200 yards before dying.

                      Good luck.

One thing I noticed about aoudad is if you are in a tree they really aren't scared of you on the ground is a totally different story.
They taste awful and there's not a whole lot of them left in the world so we have been running them off vs shooting them on our place.

Kill them all!!! You will regret your decision I promise.

They multiply very fast, have almost no predator, will sleep under your feeders, and run everything else off! If you think pigs scare off deer you haven't seen anything yet. Aoudad scare off our Pigs!!!
