Public areas in the Southern region

This may be a dumb question but I am asking it. I was just looking at the Public hunting section of TP&W and I thought that you only got a book of the public land once you bought the 48$ permit. There is a link that you can click on that shows you all the maps and different areas and there is not any areas within an hour and a half of S.A. Now I am conflicted whether or not to get the permit especially since I only really want to hunt hogs.

I researched this same question a few years ago when I started hunting. I think it is going to be tough to find public hunting within 1 hour of San Antonio where you can get a permit and walk out and hunt. You may have to go a little farther. For hogs you might try Granger. I have never been there, but there are a group of guys that hunt there and have group hunts from time to time.

I would not rule out Amistad in Del Rio either.

Try www.brushyhill.com (Sabinal,Tx.) or Hacienda Ranch in Uvalde They are about an hour and a half from you have great hog hunting and you will probably find it easier, closer, and cheaper in the long run that driving farther (gas costs) to go to Amistad. Hacienda has a NO KILL, NO FEE policy, Or you can go to Twin Buttes Reservoir in San Angelo and hunt anywhere near one of several rivers and lay out some sour corn....waa laaa, HOG S.A. is about an 3 hour drive from San Antone and its Dept. of the Interior land so there is NO permit required, nothing. Just show up and kill stuff.
