    Light for my D3100

I want to get an external light for my Nikon D3100.

I have read about using an external light and want to see if this something I want to add to my accessories. I know there are better and more expensive lights out there.

would this be a good starter light?

Not familiar with that one Timm. I know several on here use this one. http://www.amazon.com/Yongnuo-YN560-...6771162&sr=1-6

I know that's not an answer for you though.

I have Yongnuo's and they work great. But, I spent nearly $200 each on them. They'll likely be a bit more "automated" for you than the ones in the price range you're looking at.

I wouldn't get a flash that didn't have TTL. Sometimes I like to shoot manual and intentionally slightly underexpose the available light, then let the flash fill in just the difference.

I almost never use my flash without a dome diffuser.

It keeps the light from being as directional and throwing hard shadows. It tends to soften facial features. I usually point the flash almost straight up when using the diffuser. Unless I'm specifically trying to bounce the light in a certain direction, the diffuser is pretty much an automatic for me.

I would recommend looking at the Nikon SB-700, a speedlight that is fully integrated with your camera body.
One general comment about speedlights, get it off the camera body and use it as a remote light. You will need to double check that the D3100 is compatible with the SB-700 for remote flash use. Once you get the flash off the top of the body, you will see a big difference in the quality of your flash photos. Have fun with it!

Sunpak is what I used to use, they're still a decent flash.
