What's the purpose of etching if not to expose some sort of design? Does it protect the blade somehow?

Did you etch it with the vinegar warm?

Keith; I get real good results if I use brown mustard. For some reason it gives the blade a deeper darker etch. I've used it doing a hammon or edge quench with 1095, I almost like it better than using ferric acid.
Looks good however.

I used hot vinegar, I like the patina look myself, it's not for everyone. It's not any easier to do either. I took this knife to 1200 grit.

yes sir, you will show scratches on a polished blade way more than on a blade with a patina.

I'll hit it with steel wool before I put it together.

Looking forward to seeing the end result. I have seen pictures of really nice blades but my own experimenting has been terrible.
