    Logging and hunting

The spot where I hunt has gotten rediculously thick over the last few years. It burned about 25 years ago and had basically just been left to grow inmanaged since then. Well, the landowner finally decided to log it. I think it looks great from the standpoint that its gonna be much easier to get around in. The roads are wider, there are many more open areas, and visability has really improved. But, Ive had several people tell me it wont be much good for hunting this year, but it should be good next year.

What do you think? Will that spot be any good for hunting this october? I thought it would be great, but Ive never really hunted a freshly logged area.

Get you a truck load of oats.
You can toss them every where the ground is busted up from the skidders.
Hunting will be mush better than hunting in mature pine timber.

Did he just log out of it or did he clear cut it. That will make a huge difference in how it effects the hunting.

It will be just fine. Clearcuts are usually good places to hunt.

Well, I really cant tell what the end goal is. Some of the places look like strip cutting where they went in and cut 10' strips and cleared everything, mature and otherwise, and left scrubby, overcrowded stuff on either sides. Still, others look like selective thinning where they have gone in and cut what they wanted and left some stuff to mature. Then there are other places where they have cleared an area ranging from a 50 yd circle, to a 100x400 yd swath, but I assume this is where they set to load.

The 3rd year will be better than the first two years if he replants it,,find your game trails coming out of the standing woods and set up there

It will be much better, more sunlight getting to the floor which will increase browse. More food means more deer.

Don't think he will replant because I think he's a little short on funds. Probably just natural reseed, but who really knows with him.

We logged our land about 8 years ago and deer are curious creatures. They hung around to see what was going on and it didn't effect our hunting at all. That being said, if he doesn't actively maintain the clear cuts, it will grow over very quick!

Get your own tractor (or hire someone) to clean it up and maintain it how you want it. Plant food plots.

Definitely don't have a shortage of tractors. FIL is, well, I guess you could call him an enthusiast. They are old, but there's plenty of them.

We logged out about 5 years ago. They finished up first of season. Good hunting every year. We weren't able to maintain like we wanted to and have lost some hunting area to growing over.

Spot on right here....... Our farm has been a timber producing property for right at 45 years now. Deer wont really move all that far during timber operations. I can not tell you how many times I have seen deer right in the middle of timber operations, within an hour of them shutting down for the day. THEY ARE CURIOUS ! Once timber operations are completed years 1 thru about 5-7 will hold more natural browse than ever before. Once the canopy starts to develop it will be more forest land based. Managed timber operations with just slight focus on wildlife and water shed protection are the best option in my honest opinion for creating the best wildlife habitat that can be had in an area.
