I am about to set up protein feeders, but I was thinking about a small food plot also. My question is, we have a lot of wheat and cotton around us so is it worth putting in a small plot if I have protein feeders set up?

Hey farmerdad....small spring/summer plots generally get wiped out before they can do any good unless you can e-fence them.
Small fall/winter plots work better because the type of crop planted (rye, clover, oats, etc...) can handle the browse pressure much better than summer crops like beans or peas.
There is certainly nothing wrong with doing both. I just set up a big protein feeder and have food plots on my place for a long time. The more to offer them the better IMO.
Experiment and report back to us how it goes! Good luck!
