What habitat improvements are you planning for the offseason?

My plans. If I get half of it done I will be happy.

-We are working on opening up some old native pasture. We arent planning on completely clearing it but opening up the best areas and leaving some soft edges in the areas that wont grow grass quite as well.

    - Move an existing blind down a ridge about 50 yards. I will be able to see 3x as much and will put me in a sniper type position with most of the area being ~25 feet felow eye level.

    - I want to fence off a couple areas we plant in oats so I can also plant spring plots without worrying about the cows. Will require over a mile offence if I got it all done.

    What do you have planned?

Clearing a new fence line and fencing out the neighbor's cattle and putting a few of my own on it.

Clearing a new 1 acre plot next to my thick woods. Hinge cutting some new areas to funnel the deer onto trails I want them on....I'm tired of getting busted.

Also more switch grass planting and bicolor lespedeza to screen off one of my neighbors.

Oh yeah got more chestnut seeds but this year I'm gonna direct seed them into the ground.

I noticed a lot of downed limbs while hunting in December that I thought about dragging them together to make a natural ground blind....

        Add that to my list...

I am adding cottonseed to our feeding program this month. This is in addition to the 120 tons of protein we fed last year.

Where are you getting it and for how much? Not as easy to find as in years past and price has gone up

I got a food plot going in for summer in one half of the field. the other half i will be doing a fall plot. increasing the size of my protein feeder pens. think i realized that they are too small. and lastly, if I can get it done, make a small watering hold back in the wooded area, that way, the deer dont have far to travel from the protein feeders for water.

                  should be a fun year.

Why the addition of cottonseed? Give us some insight on your thinking. I'm sure you have a good reason with some info to back it up with. I'm interested.

larger spring and fall food plots, t cutting sweetgums in an attempt to put more food at deer feeding level along with funneling. Thinning pines for more sunlight to the dirt. Fun stuff

While not habitat related I am going to try and get a 100 yard rifle range range built. I have a good berm already where they dug caliche for our road. Need to build a bench, cover and target backstop.

Completely changing the stand set ups on 300 acres, probably adding a 4th and maybe 5th set up on trail intersections w/o feeders.

                              Small food plots
