    First Euro Mounts...

I shot both these deer in the past month and decided to try my hand at DIY euro mounts. I still need to build a pedestal base, but the skulls themselves are finished. I simmered the skulls with a mix of baking soda and dawn liquid dish soap to degrease and whitened them with salon 40% peroxide and cream whitener. I sealed the skulls with a 50/50 mix of elmers glue and water. I haven;t done anything to the antlers and was wondering if I need to put some sort of matte clear coat on them to keep them from deteriorating. I don't want them to be shiny though. let me know what you think...

Those turned out really nice. The antlers shouldnt deteriorate at all so I wouldnt put anything on them, unless you just want to. Nice job.

Those look great! As mentioned above the antlers should be fine, the only thing I ever put on them is some minwax stain around the bases if they happened to turn white from boiling and bleaching.

Elmer's was recommended as a good matte clear coat in a taxidermy forum I checked out. Went in real easy with no bubbling or brush marks. Plus it's cheap. Mix 50/50 Elmer's and water.

This is my latest one. Mounted on a piece of split black walnut.
