    Umpiring Question

Looking into becoming an official/umpire part time while I am in college, does anyone know of how to get into it? Anywhere that is hiring? I have looked online and cant seem to really get anywhere. I am in Burleson so anywhere in the area of Ft Worth/Arlington/Burleson/Mansfield etc., thanks

There are associations all around. Join one and they will get you all of the information and help you get signed up for games. Two guys I worked with got into basketball reffing but they both mentioned that baseball Isnt as desirable because the gear runs about $600. Which takes a huge number of games to work off.

I can't answer your question but you may want to get this moved to the Around the Campfire forum to get a lot more people seeing it!

Show up at any little league field, and they'll hook you up. I've never heard of an ump excess, and they'll probably even loan you a shirt so you can start right then. Most places have basic gear (mask, chest protector, shin/knee guards) that you can use. You're gonna have to buy black steel toed shoes (< $25 at Wallys), a cup, grey/black slacks, a couple short brimmed black caps, ump bag with clicker/brush/whistle, and a few umpire shirts. The ump shirts are your biggest cost, they're $15-$25 each, and if you really get into it, you'll need several in about 4 different colors. Not to mention a few in double sizes if you're gonna look nice and wear your chest protector under the shirt. You don't have to be TASO to ump, but most places pay more if you are. I remember making about $25 a game here in podunk, you'll probably make more where you are. Do the little league for a season, if you make it without quitting, the other TASO umps will get you on doing high school ball if you can travel.
