    Mud motor build

So after a ton of decsion making, planning and research on what kind of mud motor i want to build i have settled on a 16hp longtail. The reason i am going with the longtail is pure simplicity, durability and cost. The longtail design has a 72" shaft that is keyed on one end and threaded on the other to connect to the universal joint which attaches to the motor shaft. i will be using a 16hp duromax from maxtool.com that was the largest motor that was under $1000 new so being a college student that was my best option. i have almost all of the parts except a few peices of metal in finally that ive ordered from various places. backwaterinc is a great company with a lot of knowledge in helping you build a mud motor and is where i got my prop, u-joint and a few other parts. they are more than willing to help you out in any way they can an will sell full kits and also parts like the transom mount, cavation plate etc. in this thread i will try to throughly go through the process of the build and can answer any questions you may have. will get some pictures up of my materials and price list as soon as i get home this evening.

Man, not to dissuade you, but I bought a 30hp Briggs vertical shaft for $1k this year to go on my ProDrive. I don't know what size boat you are putting it on, but it's almost a given that you are going to want more power when it's all said and done.

You should just buy my motor so I can buy a bigger one...lol

BTW, did those GHG's work out for you this year?

i had a 20hp longtail it went anywhere the others will go just not as fast and if you get stuck in the mud you can use it for leverage to spin the boat to get you out. good luck with it

Interesting. I almost bought a mud motor boat once until I drove one. NEGATIVE... I bought an airboat instead!!!! And it was the best decision I've ever made!!! Now, if it'd sell so I can upgrade...
