I am looking at getting a Gitzo Mountaineer Series tripod but for as little as I will use it, its hard to justify the price. With a ball head, I am looking at around $500-$600 for the complete setup.
Legs:
Option 1:
Gitzo Series 00 GT-531
Specs:
Weight 0.9lbs
12.9" folded height
11lb capacity
26.38 in Max Height
**Note this one is extremely light but due to the max height, you must sit down to use it. I feel like this would be ideal for binoculars/spotting scope/camera multi use, but some might find it too limiting.
Option 2:
Gitzo Series 0 GT-0531
Specs
Weight 1.6 lbs
20" folded height
11 lbs capacity
51.5 max height
This one is heavier and bulkier, but still very compact for a tripod.
Anyway... my thought was maybe buy one and then rent it out for $50/ 2 weeks or something similar. I tried to find anything ultra-light for rent and can't find these particular ones, but I did find a similar one for around $100/ 2 weeks. I can't be the only one wanting one of these maybe once a year.
Whats everyone's thoughts on this? After using my custom Joby SLR Gorillapod for taking Milky Way shots and cursing the while, I decided an ultra light travel tripod was needed for my hunt of a lifetime in the Tian' Shan mountain range. Even a 2 lb tripod wont cut it over 10000 ft.
The problem with my current tripods are they are such a pain to lug around, and take up a lot of room in an already crowded pack, so I leave them at home most of the time. Usually I can get away with that, but I want to take some extreme exposure and night shots and a tripod makes that much easier.
