    ? Soaking game in milk??

Alright... So I've been cooking venison and other game dang near all my life. The other night at work I had some venison cube steak and my partner kept asking me if I was gonna soak them in buttermilk before cooking it up, it takes away the *game* taste as he described. He has never cooked venison and hardly ate any but someone told him to do that... I have never in my life heard of such a thing. We've always just washed, prepped, then cooked. Mine has always come out great... And usually all gone!

Have y'all heard of this? Do y'all do this? Hmmmm? Give me a little insight of you know anything about it! Thanks

Yep - Only do it when I am feeding people that really don't like the "wild" taste. They never know the difference. I also mix it with a little W sauce and whatever spices I would be using on the rub that night. Typically only have to do this with duck however, most everybody I know likes the "wild" taste of venison.

I've heard of it from several sources, but have never tried it. Like you, I just rinse, season & cook (either wrapped in bacon on the grill or chicken fried). I also feel if the meat tastes good as it is, why change it? OK, now I'm getting hungry.

I know folks that do that.
My wife soaks ours in salt water over night and draws all the blood and gamey taste out.. This is the only way she will eat it.

            Interesting.......

Well I know back in SC- we hunt deer with dogs. With the dogs chasing the deer it gets their blood pumping and adrenaline rushing. Momma said she didn't like eating the deer that I killed dog driving because it tastes different. I wonder if soaking it would draw that blood taste out... Hmmm thanks!

That's what I do with mine if it's being cooked inside. Learned it from my grandma when she used to cook it chicken fried for us when we were younger. Removes all the blood from the meat. If you soak your meat in a cooler changing out the ice water regularly for a few days before you take it to processor this is not needed. Try it. It helps. Looks kinda of pale and grey but tastes great. It even makes diver ducks taste edible.

When we fry back strap we tenderize it and then soak it in milk, helps a lot, can really tell the difference

Of course these are mature bucks we are cooking too!

When I was a kid at home my mother wouldn't eat any game that hadn't been soaked in either buttermilk or her other favorite salt and vinegar water.. The only time I got to eat it any other way was when I camping and she wasn't along.. I don't soak game that way now.. but it works..
