Arrow length is really dependent on tuning. A longer arrow will have a weaker spine, and shorter will be more stiff. Adding weight in the front, or decreasing weight at the rear (like using feathers instead of vanes) will weaken spine, and the opposite will stiffen spine. There are computer programs like TAP or OT-2 that can help you determine the best length based upon your exact setup and arrows you are using. There is a lot to it if you are going for absolute perfect spine, but you don't have to go that in-depth to still shoot good. What is you draw length, what type and spine arrows are you shooting, and what is your tip weight?

I am going to have to disagree on the arrow length being dependent on tuning, at least to most of the bowhunters out there. Most bowhunters are going to buy a certain length arrow based on how long they want their arrows to be based on where they want there bh to sit in front of the riser or above the shelf. then they are going to look at the chart for a particular arrow and look at the # of their bow, cam style and point weight and then buy the right spine according to these variables. Then with this spine arrow, point weight and length, bow tuning can begin. The variables can be changed by the point weight or feather/vane combo or increasing or decrreasing the bow draw weight. The perfect way, but the longest and hardest for most bowhunters would be to start with a longer arrow and tune by cutting the shaft to achieve optimum arrow flight. Then again, the bow needs to be tuned perfect to make this happen and if the bow is tuned, then you shold be able to look at the charts and buy a shaft within the spine recommended and get good arrow flight.

i cut mine my gold tip expedition hunter my self and with the help of the wife she marks the shaft a 1/4" past the rest. loose as much weight as possible...but keep and eye on if your string is stretching or anything out of adjustment. i use a awl to mark all my setting on the sights, rest and limb adjustments to make sure its staying where i put em

I am trying to determine arrow lentgh so that i can determine the correct spine and so on. I have always just shot arrows by the wieght rating on the box, iknow that sounds crazy but never had anyone tell me different. Now i am trying to teach my kids and that not what i want to teach them. That is why I join this forum(brotherhood) is to learn from others. Since I dont have a good local shop.

Jimmy, You are probably going to end up around 28 inches to 28.5 inches given the description of your set up. Look at the arrow manufactures website and find the proper spine for an arrow about that long. Just remember it is better to go stiffer than weaker on spine so if it is close and could go either way you might want to get the stiffer shaft. Once you got them, I would draw them back and have someone mark it around an inch in front of the rest so that the broadhead lands over the riser shelf at full draw or mark it at the riser if you want the broadhead in front of the riser. If you want it in front of the riser, your arrow will probably be an inch to an inch and half longer than I previously stated. After marking it, I usually round it up or down to the nearest half or quarter inch so you don't have an odd ball length. Best of luck.
