    White Oak Creek WMA

I have been drawn for a rifle hunt for the weekend of the 16-18th of November, and have never been there before. I studied some areial photos, but would appreciate any info that anyone can provide! I know that there have been several hunts completed already, any sucess?

I live 10 minutes from White Oak WMA and have hunted the area for the past 25 years. My daughter took her first deer there a couple of weeks ago during the youth hunt. I am a lot more familiar with the south end of it. This year we have a bumper crop of acorns and they are the prime food source. Right now the deer are really hitting the White Oak acorns the best and the pigs are working on the Pin Oak acorns. Depending on what game you are after the most is where I would hunt. Climbers to me are the best choice. There are plenty of tall slick trees for them. The hogs will be close to the water since things have started to dry out here over the last couple of months but they are very abundant. The deer population is excellent and quality are good. The bucks are really starting to get hot after the girls right now. The Twin Lakes Area just south of Interstate 30 seems to produce more of the bigger deer taken every year. During the youth hunt a young man took an excellent 9 point (140 class maybe) off of area 1. I plan on hitting the south end hard when they open the bow season back up. My advice for deer is climbers, White Oaks and hunt the scrapes right now.

Brushbuster, thanks for the info, also can you reccommend any particular compartments. I have been told the compartments 6,7,8,9,10 along 259 seem to produce some good deer numbers. Do you happen to know which compartments the twin lakes area is in! Any info would be appreciated. I dont expect for you to tell me all your honey holes, I just have never been there and would like some good points of reference to start from!

      Thanks

I don't have my map that shows the compartments with me but i can check it tonight and let you know the numbers that i know about. The Twin Lakes area is just south of I 30 and on the west side of the Sulphur River. It general produces the higher scoring bucks. If you look at a satellite pic of the area it is two kidney shaped lakes that kinda paralell each other. They are actually a lot longer than they are wide. I had a couple of friends that bow hunted during the first season that said it seemed that this year the deer were funneling between the lakes to a white oak ridge between the lakes and the river. One saw 1 really nice buck (guessed him to be upper 140's) and the other saw 3 that were really nice. I will try to post some areas for you tomorrow.

brush buster, I finally aquired a map with the compartments drawn in, and it looks to me like 7,8,9,10 are just south of 30, i looked at the aerial photos today and the only resemblence of two kidney bean shaped lakes appear to be in compartment 10, west of the sulphur. If you have time and want to e-mail me with your phone number, we can talk it over. If not, I understand. My e-mail is jholland1977@yahoo.com. Thanks again brush buster!

Droptine1, Mind if I ask where you found a map with compartment info? I haven't hunted the place either. I've hunted on corp land around the lake and seen a few, last year anyway. My neighbor and are thinking of heading over that way in early December. My dad lives on past Naples off of 77. 25,000 acres of archery only, there should be plenty of room. I've thought about taking my kayak and boating in to get away from the easier access areas. But I tried that at Cooper, only to hit a log jam...'the best laid plans'...spoiled Anyway, good luck with your hunt!

              flogORfish,

I got a photo copy of the map that is in the public lands booklet, but the wildlife biologists had drawn the compartments over that map. It is not good for clarity, but when you look at the aerial photos and cross reference the two of them together, it can be helpful. ( I hope). I have a good idea about where i would like to hunt, I just hope I can get that compartment that i am after!

HUNTING was pretty poor as a whole, there were 52 hunters i think, and when I signed out there had only been 5 or 6 deer checked in. I saw and most everybody that I talked saw very few deer. There truck loads of acorns still falling, and the heat had deer movement to a minimum. I did manage to shoot a spike buck on Saturday evening, and that was it for me. White Oak is a beautiful place to hunt with large tracts of hardwood timber/ river bottoms. We had a great time, and will apply again. Hopefully next time the weather will cooperate a little better.

I've heard that place is pretty impressive. The acorns are killing everywhere seems.
