How many preference points does it take ???

I've been trying 5 years to be drawn on the Texas public hunts and have been apllying for my son for 4 years and he hasn't been drawn yet. Looks like the youth gun deer at Gene Howe was a 1 in 8 chance to get drawn last year. He has luck like me. Poor kid. Just wondering if anyone could let me know how many years it has taken them to get drawn.

It depends on where you apply. Odds are a lot better at some places than other. I have 8 preference points and have been trying to draw gun deer at Matador or Gene Howe without any luck. Doesn't hurt so bad not to get drawn when you have a lease, so I'm thankful for that.

My daughter and I are in the same situation this is our 4th year without geting drawn. She did win a postcard hunt for hogs last year. Luck of the draw.

1 in 8 aren't very good odds. Don't let hunts with low success rates scare you, you'd be surprised at the shooting skills of your average hunter.

Even on hunts with a 20% success rate, most hunters see deer and quite a few of them get shots.

I got drawn to hunt San Angelo gun either sex this year. I have sent my application in on different hunts for at least 10yrs.

Texas does it differently than Colorado. In Texas, you can be drawn the first year or never get drawn. The points are just how many slips of paper with your name on it go into the hat. My boys have been drawn 3 out of 5 years, but we put in for a hunt that is less popular. Today I found out that my buddy and I were drawn for the gun mule deer hunt at Sierra Diablo! This was our 5th yr in that pool.

              Exactly.
Not bragging, but this makes my son's 5th yr in a row to get drawn. A whole lot depends which ones you apply for. The one thing I DO NOT LOOK AT is the success rate. I have been on enough of these to know that every place is as good as the other.
Plus, I have a good system!!!

i have 11 gator pp, and never been drawn?
but i drew archery wt at sommerville/birch creek, archery mule deer at black gap, and my son drew either sex gun at gus engleing.........all first year applications with no points...go figure.
i have 12 pp's in a special unit in colorado, and they say 13 will get you drawn..i have no clue how that all works

I have never been drawn for a youth hunt. Two boys that are now 21 and 15. I did get drawn for a hunt with a friend that had a bunch of pref. points. Then on a whim I applied for a hunt this year in a category I have never applied for and got drawn. So who knows. I guess it is just literally just luck of the draw.

4 pp's did not get me a gator hunt, mule deer, or exotic.

It really depends on where you are applying. If you are trying to get drawn in very popular places where the odds are 1 in 50 applications you will need more than 10 preference points to get drawn. This year i put in for 5hunts and got drawn for 3. I only had 2 preference points on these hunts. Now im trying to figure out how im going to take so much time off from work lol!

As said above, it depends on where you apply, the odds, preference points, etc..

My own personal experience is that I have been drawn five times in seven seasons for hunts. Those include GDE (twice), Archery-Exotic, ADE, and Turkey.

I got drawn for Richland GDE the first time I applied for it in 2004. I reapplied every year since and got drawn this year. So it took me five preference points to get drawn again for that hunt. I have won hunts when there were 60 permits and 1,200 applications. Most hunts I apply for have a 10% chance or less of getting drawn.

You have to make a decision on whether you want to hold out for a highly desirable hunt, or maybe one that isn't. I have personally enjoyed every hunt that I have been on regardless of whether I killed anything or not.

I have been applying for 5 years and have been drawn every year. This year I got drawn for archery at lake somerville and gun at matador.

It took my boy 6 years to get drawn for gator. They have been drawn for WT at Pat Mayes a couple of times now with 0 or 1 pts. I would suggest any parent with an 8yr old start putting in now and maybe by the time they are 16 they will have drawn a couple of hunts. This year I put them in for the youth hunts and my regular hunts as well if they draw either they don't have to pay anything.
