I had my son Todd and grandson Cody up from San Antonio this past weekend and we had a ball. It's neat to share hunting with young people, but sitting in a popup blind with a 7 year old energizer bunny is some tough duty. This would be Todd's only weekend during bow season, so I wanted him to get in some quality hunting and I would hunt with/entertain Cody.
Saturday morning I set Todd up in a tree stand and Cody and I manned the popup. Within an hour Cody thought we should move to a different place. We were on a good trail, on a fence crossing but hadn't seen a thing. I'm just guessing but I think noise might have been a factor. Todd did shoot over a decent 8 pt. at 20 yards so at least he had an opportunity.
That evening Todd sat the same stand and Grandpa tried a different approach. Cody and I stalked some wallows, glassed for deer, and scouted around in general. Being on the move worked alot better for Cody. We saw alot of deer and observed animal sign, but still no shots.
Sunday morning my hunting buddy decided to stay in bed so I was able to climb up in my treestand. This black sow came running down the trail and at 22 yds. stopped behind a small tree, so I stood and drew the Renegade. She stepped out and I thought,"that sure looks like alot of pins." In the rush,I hadn't put my glasses on and I had a fuzzy mess. I put the 20 blob on her and let it rip. A perfectly executed spine shot by a blind bowman.
She weighed in at 110 lbs and only confirmed that Grandpa is a TBH.
