Where are you going, Troy? I know there has to be a story here.

Get to the airport and check in early.

In for an incredible story before this is over...

Like many have said, look up policy on the airline you are flying on. Each airline has different guidelines and each employee interprets that rule differently. Leave yourself at least an extra 30 -45 minutes for the check in.

Have done multiple times on United with no issues. Look up policies on their website, make a copy and put in your pocket. Some of those young people behind the counter don't know all the rules.

Laws may vary by state but I can tell you it's not a requirement that the lock be non-TSA. I flew to MA with a handgun in February and all the IAH counter personnel cared was that it was in a locked case and inside luggage. A small mark was made on the bag tag but no one was the wiser when I picked it up from baggage claim at Logan.

Son, leave the pistol at home. Those folks at TSA wont play around with you, and would love to make an example of someone trying to check in with a pistol.

After all you got a mini bike to fix and a tow truck to escort.

Be very careful to check the laws of the state you are flying to. Make sure your gun is legal there. If you flew into a NYC with that pistol, you would immediately regret it (and may very well be arrested).

                Case in point: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/10/ny...n-arrival.html

Southwest is easy to check in usually but it does depend upon the airport also. Like stated above check with the airline on how they want it stored. Ammo does differ per airline as far as same case or different case. Phoenix airport will hand your bag to the TSA and let them swab it for bomb residue.

Super easy now. Actually prefer it this way. Have it unloaded and shells in an original box. Locked hard-sided container inside your checked bag. Declare firearms when checking your bag and sign a piece of paper. Leaving San Antonio the other day, they took me back with my bag and did the TSA thing. Leaving Vegas, I just locked everything up and stood in a spot for 10 minutes liked they asked. TSA said if they needed me otherwise they would find me.

                            Flying with a firearm?

For a moment I thought this thread was about Troy jumping a minibike on a high ramp while armed.
