    Tell my about this??

Got my hands on a Remmy 721 a while back and just took it down for a deep clean. Best I can tell it was manufactured in 52. This was done to the stock. It is definitely lead. But why? Weight? Some kind of voodoo trick from back in the day? Just curious.

Just guessing but I bet they were taking some of the recoil out of it.
Looks like they weighted it too so it would remain balanced.

I thought about the balance thing. The receiver and stock are also tapped for a peep sight. Just gets one wondering what these old guns have gone through.

My initial was recoil but if the peep was the preferred sight system, it was likely more for balance and/or both...maybe did some off hand shooting for comp & what not. Although the purist in me wants any old gun to remain original, you gotta love some of the goofy stuff owners did at the time. Heck, nobody at the time knew an off the shelf gun could have any sort of future value by leaving it mint.

Kinda cool thinking of them drilling it & pouring lead in the holes...bet it smelled neat.

Definitely tracking Artos. Here’s a picture of “custom” peep work. The 52 included. It’s stamped RYY on the barrel.

I killed two deer this year with this gun. It’s officially mine.

why its there? to add weight. reason for weight? 1st is most likely recoil and then 2nd would be balance. Is the rifle balanced? if you hold the rifle under the bolt in front of the trigger guard, does it tip or stay level?

The peep sight mounting holes and the notch in the stock for the peep were factory. A lot of Redfield peep sights were used prior to scopes being popular.
