I always used one of those med blue plastic kids pools when we had pups . Easy to clean up and just throw away when done. Also worked well to keep the pups in it and momma could get out away from them when she needed a break. We used a flat heated kennel pad as well and put it directly under one side of the pool and the pups would crawl off and on it when they needed to warm up, get a big enough pool so momma can lay and not be on the heating pad. We haven't had any pups for years but my Brittany I had would take several hours. You will need lots of newspaper !

We used to lay down old bed sheets. Be careful the pups don't get under the folds and momma looses them. Once they were crawling around pretty good, we would use an old baby play pen that lets down on the sides. Momma can jump in and out, but the babies can't. Basically like the pool idea mentioned above, but the angle of the sides is backwards and the pups can't climb out as easy once they get more mobile.

The last litter of pups that I had, the mom had some trouble. I ended up taking her to the vet. He pulled 2 big ones after she had 4 at the house. He said she was done. She had one more on the way home that night. The next day when I got home from work, she had had another (about 12 hours later). Most dogs do really well on their own.
