    This weapon was very likely holstered at the time, and the soldier was facing the explosion

      Not shrapnel---but fragments from explosive ordnance--shrapnel is "grapeshot" as in a big shotgun.

        As a military member there are some things that make my mouth go dry when I look at them. The Vietnam wall is one, that pistol is another. My God........

              My ol'man was also at the Bulge and the Bridge at Remagen. Earned his Bronze Star at Remagen. 9th AD

              I have much memorabilia from his campaigns.
