    Planting Oats

Is now a good time to plant oats?

Can you just spread them and expect them to grow?

Disc lightly as you can. They don't need to be covered too deeply. Half to 3/4" is about right. If you don't cover at all, birds will have a field day.

I think you'll be fine planting now.

I planted in mid/late September. Spread them out on bare dirt and dragged a fence panel over them. 2/3 of the plot looked really good last weekend, best where it was shaded and held moisture better. Petered out as you moved out of into direct sunlight. It really lacked rain. I fertilized it last week just before it got a good rain. Deer have been utilizing it for 3 weeks now.

You should be fine. We use a cultivator and come back behind it with a drill. Never tried any other way. We still have a lot of moisture in the soil though.
