Default Peregrine Falcon in California

These were taken in a single burst with a Canon 1Dx2 at 14 frames per second, so this all took place in less than one second. These birds are very fast, even when carrying an American Avocet. I probably only had eyes on it for maybe four seconds in total and thought I did very well just to get off a burst in focus and on target. Luckily, I had been shooting birds in flight and was ready for the moment.

I was using a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary lens.

I was shooting at 1/2500 and f/11 with auto ISO. (ISO 2000) I was using AF Point Expansion, which is five focus points, center with four helpers. I found that to be a nice compromise for taking photos of stationary birds and birds in flight without having to change AF settings.

This was at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay NWR in Alviso, California.

Such cool animals! Great shots! I used to love watching them dove hunt on the golf course behind the house. Worked on a 20th floor in downtown CC for a while and had one nesting on the adjacent building. Had some binos and would check in on her (assumingly) every day.

Very nice shots David. Too bad he had to catch one of my favorite shore birds.

Thanks! I know. I really like them too. Falcons gotta eat, though!
