Default Laguna Ataoscas 2017-2018

Mandatory orientation now required even for bow hunting.

I'm not surprised that they decided to do orientation for bowhunters now. Last year it seemed that the hootleheads really came out to play.

Even though I was able to score a buck on last year's hunt, I'm not sure if I'll put in for another archery hunt at LA. I really had a hard time trying to shake the crowds of hunters. Just too many people at once. I couldn't swing a dead cat over my head without hittin someone in an orange hat.

I hear ya Palehorse. I had two tripods within 200 yards of me last year and hadn't seen anyone around me the previous five years. I noticed also they're only having two deer archery hunts this year instead of three. Hunting LA is not for newbies and one tough place to hunt.

This was the one. Don't know if I told you, but the next morning I drove up on a monster 10 just standing on the road in between the first and n second gates along section 8 about 11 am. He was tending a doe. Wish the new rules on shooting your tag limit was in effect then.

Thanks txoutdoorsman! It was still drying in that photo and then touched up, but its the only photo I have saved. Detail looks much better on the finished mount! Hope we both get to go! Are you as excited as I am to read all these comments in the next few months?! I'm giddy with excitement!

I've been looking forward to it for sure. Best hunt I've ever been on and didn't kill anything.

Looks awesome!

Just curious, did you have any luck with the warranty claim on your drone last year?

Yes, especially when an educator spells "ataoscas" wrong, they aren't allowed to debate ones diction! Remember the Alaomo!

I've never taken the time to do so, yet! Perhaps I will soon. A dealer told me that they have been seeing a lot of cases of the mysterious "FLYAWAY" in those models, and DJI has been replacing them. We'll see!

Notice the in the NEW archery regulations: NO DRONES/AIRCRAFT LMFAO!!!

Yeah, I saw that too. Thought it was interesting that is says operating a drone over refuge property is illegal. I wonder what law makes this illegal??

I think that means a "hiney". As in, "That big ole gal just pinched me on the touche." I might be wrong though.

So then what if a hunter is from out of town or out of state. He as to be present for this? It has three dates but only two hunts on the TPWD website.

If they can't make the orientation, they shouldn't put in for the draw. Two deer, one exotic.

I liked the way it used to be. 600 openings and you picked which hunts you wanted. You could do it in person or by mail. I live 5 minuted away from the place. I felt like I had my own lease. It was awesome.

How much were the archery permits the past couple of years?

Guess it's been a couple of years since I paid any attention to that since I'd been up in Missouri every hunt and the permit was $70.

And by the way, nice buck Gblu

Having experienced the refuge staff last year, that "orientation" will be a list of "you can'ts" and "don'ts". They don't care for hunters in the least. On the other hand, if you happen to be wearing a wide-brimmed tourist hat and bermuda shorts, they'll bend over backwards to help you.

I completely agree. It is not like it used to be, years ago. It was actually a good experience to walk into the check station and do the meet and greet ritual with everybody there.

Now they make you fell like you are interrupting their daily schedule. At least it was like that for me last year.

Just carry binos and tell them you want to watch the birds. Oh yah, tell them you're infatuated with ocelots too! You might even get a back flip out of them.
Don't forget to tell Marion hello, she loves the hunters!

They definitely messed up a good thing. Refuge was my favorite hunt. Very challenging and rewarding. Refuge staff have changed and they changed what was great about the hunt. Less access, less friendly and more cost. They definitely would rather exterminate the game out of helicopters than have to deal with public hunting.

I was informed that crossbows will be allowed this coming season. You don't have to be handicapped, senior or a minor to be able to use one. Not that I would use one but just putting it out there.

Yes they were allowed last year. I took one and used it because my bow string was nicked and started to unravel.

I drew for the second hunt this year. Last year I got drawn for archery Nilgai and didn't connect. I saw a bunch though and even missed a shot at a trotting cow. This year I'm hoping for better luck. I hunted escape routes and mud flats last year and let the other hunters chase them around for me.

How many acres are actually huntable? I see LA is 98,000 acres. Each archery hunt has 250 swingin johns...each rifle hunt has 35.

Im considering applying for archery 3...app deadline oct 15.

Also Im curious why an archery permit would be $50 in excess of rifle?
