Put 7 miles down in the forest this morning. Mainly just checking my favorite spots to see how the movement is. Everything is looking great besides one big whiteoak isn't throwing any acorns this year so the movement was minimal there. Saw quite a few rubs and decided to try my luck at a starting a mock scrape near two rubs that seem to be used year after year. I know of 3 years of use for sure. My only concern is all the people out scouting. Seems like I saw more trucks scouting than I usually see on opening day of archery.

For all you East Texas Outlaws. Just kidding. Just wanted to commend all you guys that put in the hard work and scouting to hunt public land. I shot my first deer in Davey Crocket 22 years ago with my dad. Good luck this season fellas,

For those of you that use a GPS in DCNF, what map card is the best? I finally got a Garmin etrex 20x and while I was scouting this weekend the forest doesn't show up on the base maps.

There is a free map add that shows all state and natl park boundaries. Do not remember the name but Google free park boundary map and you should find it

Spent Sunday walking around some old and new spots. I had 2 cams running since mid-august. Had a decent 8 on one cam but didn't get great pics of him(pic to come). Also had does and pigs on that cam. The other camera in a different spot had a bunch of does/fawns. At 3:30 that afternoon I came around to a pasture that had 10 doe/fawns out in it and then another doe in a different pasture around the corner. I found White, Red and Water Oaks dropping in multiple spots. Found some ladder stands that look to be from last year as well. Cant wait for next weekend.

Looks better than a "decent 8".. But then again they can fool you from behind. Still a great NF deer either way. Nice tine length

I have a little 7 acre place that a friend lets me hunt surrounded on 3 sides by NF. I put up a feeder, pop up and a camera there last week. Can't wait to see what I have showing up. It's in a great area.

Haha!! Yeah I've known him forever, he's getting older and doesn't hunt much. He was talking about all the deer he sees there, and then mentioned I should come out and hunt. Needless to say I didn't waste any time taking him up on it.

I bet so. Give them a little sanctuary then let all the hunters from the NF push them to you.

Good luck to everyone making a go this weekend

Yup. Skunked this morning. But this evening thought I heard a pig so while I was looking that direct I saw a buck, not sure if he was big or what he was moving at a good pace. I guess he grunted. Hopeful for the morning hunt.

Slow again this morning. But about 25 minutes ago I had 2 bucks at about 80 yards sparing. Couldn't tell much other than they were bucks one looked pretty good. They were in some brush. Going to try to make a move on them tonight. They were within 30 yards of where I saw that buck lastnight. So maybe I'm learning something on them.

Little late but I ended up climbing down and then put a stalk on a few pigs. Felt good to get the blood flowing. Name: 20161002_104731.jpg

Well it was slow for us too. Had a doe come in opening morning and started eating acorns at 25yrds for about 4min stood to take a shot and she caught me, blew and ran. A 100" buck snuck in 10min after her. Nothing sat night. This morning at 9:20am I saw an assembly line of 7 doe 50yrds behind me traveling at a stride. 1hr later a coyote came out. I'm assuming he is what had them running. Nothing else.

Positive. One would rake the tree then they'd lock horns. Nothing aggressive though. Because after they just walked off together

Up and set this am. Kicked up a deer walking in. Got a late start. Took forever to get to my spot and sounded like a big cow breaking branches the whole way in. Is it just me or is everything crunchy, lol

Well that's a wrap. Time to get back to the real world till next weekend I'll be back. No action this morning other than a deer coming before daylight. 3 deer all weekend and all were bucks. Lol I couldn't pay a doe to give me a visit. Good luck to the rest that will be hunting this week. They don't seem to be moving much at all.

Walking out there without making noise is impossible, especially when the leaves start falling.

BW, when rifle season comes along all you will see is does. at least that's how it always works for me! Someone must be telling them the rules of the forest.

Late to the forum this year but here I am. Saw 7 opening eve, nothing close enough and all were does. Sunday morning they were moving around 9am and we saw 9 between 9and 10. Have a few dandy's this year. I'll dig and post pics soon. Fresh ground scrapes everywhere and they are checking them constantly. I'm hunting private low fence right next to Davy in case I post any with a feeder in sight.

Gar, any nice prospects for you fellas this year? Headed back out this weekend with the fiance and hope she bags her first buck. Have her on a really good trail coming from bedding and scrapes leading to a tiny pond then off to food. Put her a climber where I watched a double brow 10 come out at 80 yards last Sunday morning. Lots of day time pics lately but they are from mid morning to early afternoon.

White oaks have a bumper acorn crop this year already size of a half dollar.

Or, anyone seeing lots of ground scrapes? They're tending them daily on our place. Cousin of mine went down there this morning and said he saw 6 different bucks whilst driving around taking care of the cattle. From his description of the sighting locations, it sounds like they're all tending scape lines that I've found so far this year.

Side note, got my go pro working again and I'll have some video of this coming weekends hunt. My fiance and I are hunting over two big scrape lines on private just adjacent to the Davy.

She doesn't know yet but I plan to propose this season as soon as she gets her buck (it will be her first). Points don't count unless you can put a ring on it I'll be kneeling behind her when she turns around so nervous but excited!

She doesn't know yet but I plan to propose this season as soon as she gets her buck (it will be her first). Points don't count unless you can put a ring on it I'll be kneeling behind her when she turns around so nervous but excited!
Congrats! That's the way to do it!

And on the scrapes.. I've seen a few but most have looked like a one and done kind of thing. Haven't seen one that has been hit more than once. Yet anyways. I have a spot staked out that had 6 bucks in 4 days hit the same rub 5 during daylight so that's where I'll be. Have to put a ground blind in as its extremely thick. Hope I don't bust them out.
