Default Public land Mule Deer hunts in Texas

Im new to the public land hunting and was wondering if there was any land out west to hunt mule deer on and what are the odds of getting drawn?

This summer, download a copy of the "Applications for Drawing on Public Hunting Lands" booklet from the TPWD website. The instructions will inform you on the rules and how to apply. There are several WMA's and state parks that have drawings for mule deer hunts. The odds of getting drawn for the rifle hunts are pretty slim. Getting drawn for the archery hunts is much easier. You can also show up on the day of the hunt and apply for a standby position. The odds of getting on as a standby is usually better than getting drawn.

You can come to Fritch, TX and hunt at Lake Meredith NRA. No drawings, you just have to have a hunting license. I hunt out there sometimes because I live about 2 minutes from the lake. It's almost 45k acres, some sections of it is no hunting and some is shotgun and archery only. There aren't a whole lot of deer out there but if you put in some time you can find them and you can stop by the rangers station and see some of the bucks they kill. I shot a descent WT 10 pt. season before last and a WT doe. The mule deer season is only two weeks so if you come, try to make it a day or two early to scout.

You are correct. A few years ago you could bow hunt Matador with just an APH permit but now you have to be drawn. There aren't any good mule deer at Matador anyway, don't even put in for the drawing.

Yep. Heard the Mule Deer situation was downright awful at the Matador.
Also, If you can stand to get turned away, I hear you can wait around early morning for a standby slot.

Is it? I thought it was about 50 miles SE of Galveston. You have to show up in person to apply.

If you're asking about the draw hunt, $3 to apply and if selected, permit is $130/hunter 17 yrs of age or over along with a valid hunting license & archery stamp. Hunt dates were mid-late Oct., Nov and Dec., extended hunt period. Example: Oct. 15-20 begins at 12noon on the first day and ends at noon on the last date.

FYI. The mule deer pic above I posted several years ago was just a real good photoshop pic. That deer is not real. There are no deer at Matador. No need to even apply.

Matador draw was a low odds back during the paper system, with the online system now its a once in a lifetime draw.

It'd be worth checking into the units that border Texas just across the state line in New Mexico units 30-31 on public as well. I've killed some great muleys not far from the state line on the Texas side hunting private property. Muleys range waaaay further than whitetails do and we've probably killed bucks that move back and forth across during the rut.....

Mine was in 2010. Chip aged it at 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 years old. I'll bet that they were brothers!

Seems like the best option is to go out of state. You can drive a few hours further and tags are easier to get. Plus you can hunt more than a weekend so you get your moneys worth.
