    Careful when processing deer

Quick warning to everyone out there, be careful when processing your deer. I cut my finger pretty bad about a month ago disarticulating the hock of a deer. The cut was about 3/4 - 1 inch long and I felt the blade bounce off the bone . Did not break the bone but severed a few nerves and part of the extensor tendon. Er Doctor put in 4 stitches (really needed about 7). It was a small cut that caused a lot of damage to my finger. Been in a splint for almost 5 weeks with another week or two to go. The finger works - painfully- but will only go about half way into a fist then stops. The ER doctor who stitched me up apparently caught the tendon and it is now healing in the wrong location. Hand surgeon said we may not have to surgically fix it but it will take 2 months of painful rehab to get my finger working fully again. If that does not work he will have to go in and reattach the tendon to the right place.

For the record this is the first time in 16 years of processing deer that I have needed to be stitched up. The worst part is that I did not even shoot the deer, I was quartering the deer for a friend.

Good luck to everyone out there this season, stay safe!

Same darn thing happened to me a month or so ago. If it wasn't for the bone in my finger I would have cut it smooth off.

        That hurt!
Get it fixed now to me waiting will make it tougher to recover. In 1980 I injured my wrist in an accident ER Dr put it in a brace for a couple of weeks then started therapy for a couple of weeks the therapy didn’t help so I was sent to a hand / wrist specialist. After test and
X-rays I was in for surgery 3 times in four months and therapy for six weeks.
        I hope you recover quickly.

Oooooof. Bad, but certainly could have been worse. Should have gone to a taxidermist as they have better suture skills than the ER doc. Good luck with recovery.

I wear a kevlar glove on my non-knife hand. It has saved me from a few cuts, but the knife point can get thru and give you a poke.

After cutting every finger on my left hand while cleaning animals over the years, my wife finally ordered me Kevlar gloves. I just put the gloves on. Then put a rubber glove over them No more trips to the ER or painful skin glue!

Been there, done that. 5 stitches outside and some in inside on the tendon. I take my time now

If you shoot him you should mount the feet

They are a lot cheaper than those ER bills!
