When I first decided to give traditional archery a try I bought a 40 lb Samick Sage recurve from 3 Rivers Archery.
I still believe it is a fantastic bow for the money. Good looking and solid riser with mounting bushings installed for any accessory that you can think of. The limbs are pretty smooth and shoot well for entry level ones. You can start with a set of low poundage limbs and then increase the weight as you build up your shooting muscles and ability. The Samick Journey is also a good buy. We keep one around the house as an extra bow for company to shoot. |

Definitely get a 35lb sage, cheap arrows, perfect your form, then jump up to a 50 lb longbow/recurve. Bob Sarrels is a Texan near Austin that’s been making bows for a long time now. I jumped in off the bat at a 49 lb longbow and wished I had staged up, which is more common than you think.

I dive headfirst into trad about 4 months ago. Sold all my compound stuff and went to RMS Gear in Colorado and had them set me up. IF you have the option of finding a shop or someone with the knowledge to get you going, start there. The choice of beginner bow depends a lot on your budget and whether or not you’re an “all-in” kinda person.
I’ve been shooting a fleetwood bow, I can’t remember the model, since I started hard core. It shoots decent, is pretty quiet, and was about $150 brand new. I paid $400 for a complete setup with arrows, tab, fletches, bow square, bow stringer, and broadheads. However, I’ve enjoyed it a lot and just ordered a Stalker Coyote that should be here in a couple months... be warned, the trad bug can bite hard. |

Don’t buy a sage , get a real bow from a real bowyer. Northern Mist Classic , if you can find one used that’s even better. Check the website and give Steve a call

Great looking bows, I bought a compound a few weeks ago so I don’t plan on using my recurve much. Going for more speed now

So yeah, trad bows are so not like women and cars... ![]() I shot about a dozen different bows at 3d shoots, etc owned by several folks on here when I mentioned I was shopping for my first high end bow. Lots of those bows were some seriously expensive and nice bows. Last edited by SwampRabbit; 02-13-2020 at 10:41 PM. |

another vote for Samick Sage or similar:
1. Start with lower weight than you think you can use, buy 25-30# bow, get good form going (~$150) 2. Buy another set of limbs when you want to move up (~$60) 3. If later you still LOVE trad, buy a nicer bow. For that long term bow, my recommendation is buy one piece or "fixed geometry" takedown- I do not recommend ILF to start on, too many things that are uncertain/adjustable, leads to complications. Bear Takedown or similar limbs that fit in in ONE way. My experience with ILF is not great. I have had limbs that were not straight, so I adjust LLA to hide it- then could never get the darn thing to shoot well. Other issues as well.... remove the complexity, pay a few $$ more to reduce risk. I did not realize how bad it was affecting me until I got an old bear takedown and overnight my groupings reduced in size by HALF or better. Started breaking nocks, had to move my distance out. Now I only worry about getting the right spine arrows, good fletching, proper string length, etc. Still too much to track, but vastly more managable. |

Started recurve in the 70's (Bear beauty), than compound, than injury, nothing for 20 years, recent crossbow. Now have a compound set low lbs shoots so accurate. Wow what happened over the years. Awesome new stuff. Back to excitied again and I am an instinct shooter so another recurve sound so good. Wife is even interested so more good stuff. I am reading comments. I am like a newcomer with ancient product know how (like me) experience. learning. Keep the info coming.

I know guys who could beat most with a stick they found and put a string on it. Brand don’t matter. Get a bow to your liking and get after it.

Sage or black Hunter. I've shot many bows from bear, Martin and several high dollar customs. I shoot a sage currently....by choice. It's a good bow. Get some 35# limbs to learn and move up in weight to hunt wherever your ready. I have 35 and 50# limbs for mine.

![]() Ive had have the 21” Hoyt Satori with Hoyt formula carbon limbs for 7 months and I can’t put it down , it’s my favorite bow I’ve ever had and by far the most accurate Setup To the op’s question, there’s so many good bows out there now everything is a good choice to your proper specs. Only advice I’ll give is that ILF setups are by far the most versatile , Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm not too far up the road from you in NW Jasper Co. I have 5 longbows and one recurve if you would like to try them. Th lowest is 40# @ 28" and the heaviest is 50#. PM me if you would like to try some.
