That is what I was worried about - I thought taking off the side rails would make it less sturdy. Glad to know that works - I have one another almost brand new one a guy left behind on our last lease. I will give that a try

just to be clear, I'm talking about a hand rail that is not a structural part of the stand. Same with the shooting rail.

I've always made my own and have probably a dozen. A couple I made with wheels on them so I could walk them in further and use them as a cart to take the deer out on.

The real difference in these ladder stands is they lean against the tree at an angle so you are climbing it like you would a regular ladder. I very rarely even tie them to the tree any more as they are that stable because of the normal climbing angle.
