    just to be clear, I'm talking about a hand rail that is not a structural part of the stand. Same with the shooting rail.

          The real difference in these ladder stands is they lean against the tree at an angle so you are climbing it like you would a regular ladder. I very rarely even tie them to the tree any more as they are that stable because of the normal climbing angle.
